Hi folks,
The following has nothing to do with audio, or even with Linux per se,
but I think of you as the right sort of people to be interested in
something like this :-) Feel free to write me off-list and we can take
the discussion elsewhere.
I've been programming professionally for about 8 years. I'm
self-taught. Lately I've been wishing I had a better grasp of computer
science fundamentals, but I can't afford the time or money to attend a
degree program. But hey, MIT has most of their academic materials
online for free - including textbooks, class notes, and lecture
videos!
The problem with doing it alone in my spare time is that there are too
many other things competing for my attention. I think it would help a
lot to have an online discussion group - a group that commits to
finish* a given course in a certain number of weeks, and can help each
other stay motivated, and help each other with difficult concepts,
etc. By "finish" I mean: watch every lecture, read the texts, and
complete every assignment.
Is anybody else interested in something like that?
I'd propose to start at the beginning, with the introductory scheme
course:

(btw, I got this idea from hearing about some people doing something similar
with Knuth's "Art of Computer Programming" books. but of course now I

I just realised that there's a patch for the Fast Track Pro that will enable
24Bit/48kHz mode (if I understood it correctly) and digital in/outs. Here's

My proposal is still to start with the introductory Scheme course,
"Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs"

Regarding the schedule - I'm not too concerned about tracking MIT's
calendar exactly; for one thing I'm not even sure if they're giving
that course this autumn. But September seems like as good a time to

link to it here. Feel free to contact anybody else you know who might
be interested and give them my email address.

I must admit, scheme leaves me somewhat cold. I once wrote a prototype
of the symbol table for an Ada compiler in scheme, and I grew to dread
it as a tool. It turns out to be hard to program without global variables.
Also, every time I met Gerry Sussman I ended up thinking (1) he would
be much easier to take if he thought he was only half as smart as he really
thought he was, and (2) if he was half as smart as he thought he was,
he would be twice as smart as me.
Nonetheless, if you wanted to do this I would listen in to email traffic,
and occasionally comment.
I was thinking it would be more interesting to go through the DSP or
maybe the Linear Systems course. But maybe everyone on this list
has more mathematics than programming skills, which is the exact
opposite of my situation.
