4:56 a.m.
´ve been using linux and learning about its
possibilities as a DAW. I intend using it as my
plataform for live performances and migrate to it for
composing too, and it is more and more certain that I
will, but, for that, it is important to compare it a
little with other plataforms... and.. i´m freaking
out, man!!!! too much stuff!! please help!! Distro
running, apps running, tests going, thats not the
prob, just need some comparinsons (i am sorry to send
some silly quests, i promess myself that i´ll build a
basic guide for musician linux newbies):
-what is ardour oposed to cubase? can it do everything
as well?
-what is snd oposed to sound forge(please v8)? can it
do everything as well? more?
-I´ve heard about linux/jack/alsa not working well
above 48KHz. Seems waaky to me, but..? and 24 bit?
-Linux and Vst do well?
-Can I get some midi out of ardour, process it in PD
and send it to a softsynth through jack connections in
real time?
-Can I get 4 audio input channels, process in PD, send
just one or two to process with LADSPA plugs and send
them out?
-What are the favorite softsynths? I just ran
addsubsyn, very good. Any other good ones?

He's mostly looking for opinions from Linux audio users. It
might have served him better to search the list archives, but I
don't think Google would have gotten him anywhere.
I've been reading this list for like 3 or 4 years now and I'd
even like to hear answers to some of his questions. I may need
an alternative to Zyn, for example, because my music shares a
lot more themes with satanism than it does with christianity
despite not being heavy metal, and while his license doesn't
prohibit my use of it, his intent might. Just randomly
downloading stuff linked from Dave Phillips' page has never
worked out well for me, so I watch the list and when I see
something new announced or appearing in a lot of subject lines,
I try it. Asking seems like it might be more efficient.

Check out ardour.org for a feature list of Ardour. There's not much
midi yet in Ardour. I never used Cubase. (Maybe you can tell us Linux
users later, if Cubase can do everything that Ardour can do?

Snd can do much more than Soundforge. For example it is artificially
intelligent. And you can run Snd in Pd. Try that with Soundforge. One
really cannot compare these two programs. In fact, you cannot compare
Snd to anything else. Check out the Snd manual for a glimpse of some
of the things Snd can do.

Not true at all, where did you find that?

Yes, they do well. I do well, too, thanks. ;) But what does "do well"
mean here? Linux is the kernel of the operating system we use. Vst is
a specification for audio plugins by Steinberg. They don't have much
in common.

Not through Jack, but you can use the ALSA sequencer instead to route
Midi between Pd and Ardour just fine. But as I wrote, Midi in Ardour
is still quite limited. But you can use MusE and Pd together very
well, for example.

Mileage varies a lot. IMHO, you better stay with windows
if you like / depend on VST that much.

Two obvious differences: Cultural background and Ardour's lack
of MIDI tracks.
The latter is asked for by many, it's lack raising eyebrows on
a regular basis. Personally I couldn't care less. You can
sync a MIDI sequencer to Ardour/JACK.
The former is underrated, neglected even, I think.
Your question "Can it do everything as well" is serious bait I
cannot resist :) Cubase actually did some things well when I
last laid hands on it (SX), like editing stuff being close to
fool-proof (me being the fool), unified and very accessible,
good gui. Some things appeared to be outright ridiculous
though, like limited bus/track counts.
The Ardour/JACK infrastructure could be called "bare-bone
routing monster" and works very well and reliable. There are
issues, some deep, but none that seem to prevent people from
recording albums with it.

You've heard wrong. Certain audio interfaces might have
problematic alsa drivers, true. I believe some of those
driver issues would turn out to be vendor issues really.

It's very usable but it's a hack and it resembles much an
arranged marriage: Practical maybe and definitely not happy
(License issues preventing the distribution of vst enabled
binaries, gui issues etc.). Torben Hohn's xfst says it all on
stdout: "lost focus, got the focus, wtf, quit"

That is a feature, freedom of choice, which can be
quite confusing.
Comparing is helpful to get into it but be prepared that some
applications taking different approaches and new possibilities instead
of just ripping off stuff and be always behind the big boys.

If you want to compare ardour to a commercial counterpart, Protools is
the one to look at. For midisequencers you should look at Rosegarden and
Wired, but the development of wired is slow:
