Hi,
I'm searching a way to record a good guitar distorsion under linux. I
already have a distorsion effects pedal (Zoom GFX8) which sounds quite
good connected to a good guitar amplifier.
However when I connect it to my soundcard I loose the pre-amp, amp and
speaker effects and it sounds crapy. Do you know any program/LADSPA
plugin/other plugin to simulate those steps? Specially I would like to
simulate well the speaker/cabinet.
I would like get rid of the amp + mic to record... But it's not easy for
the disto style which I search (Mesa-Boogie style, reference sound from
bands: Refused, Funeral for a Friend, Poison the well, Thrice...). Do
you think it is possible? What do I need?

the amp is an integral oart of your sound design; even if
there was a cool LADSPA plugin or similar to emulate this, I
doubt if it would exactly sound like what you're expecting.

I haven't found anything in Linux but I can recommend a Behringer
V-Amp or V-Amp Pro. They sound great recorded direct. The V-Amp Pro
has S/PDIF I/O as well.

I already tried V-amp and I didn't like it. I prefer the Zoom GFX8 (a
lot of people will think that I am crazy but yes... I don't like the
distos of V-amp, they are too "crunchy" for me). However maybe I didn't
play enough with it to get a good sound...
Does V-amp Pro improve it significantly?

Yeah, given a choice I use tube amps and mics but if I can't (or I'm
just playing around) then I like the V-Amp better than anything else

Being an owner of a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ and now a Music Man 112 <EL34
back end> which I'll likely run with my old Seymour Duncan Tube Pre amp
(because the MM 112 has a solid state front end) I'm kinda addicted to
"valves" meself!
The only gitar app I have heard that gives some control is Revalver in
Sonar but it is also "All bark and no bite" in terms of dynamics and any
of the "airyness" dimensional sound quality that comes from a good tube
setup. To be fair, the LADPSA's mentoned here I have not played with too
much...
Still don't like that warm beer though! 8~) Room temperature they
say... :)

bloody mark on
it...tolex, grill all original and like new. $315.00!!!! This would be
late 80's model I think...AFAIK, the mid 70's thru late 70's had the
single 12AX7 in the front end. This is the model that has the Phasor
built in. Single channel.
In the RP100 the P stands for phaser. There was an RD100 with built
in distortion. Mine is single channel (it's got a low and high input),
spring reverb (not very good IMHO), bass and brite boost switches, low,
mid, treble, reverb, phaser rate, phaser level, two levels of preamp
out. I got mine in the local music shop. It was on consignment for
$250 :) I've replaced the grill cover after beating the poor thing half
to death for the last few years. I finally had to replace the original
speaker. I put in a Jensen Vintage - well worth the effort although the
damn thing weighs a ton now.

The amp models in Line 6's POD series is much better than the V-amps.
IIRC it has a higher sample rate as well.
The price shows it though.

The best solution will always be to get a decent preamp and condenser
mic to mic your amp with and send that to your card rather than going
direct. You just can't beat the real thing.
However if you must go direct, I've had good results recently using
Florian's jack convolver. There are lots of impulse response samples
freely available on the net for various preamps, amps and speaker cabinets.
