Greetings:
I'm working on a new article for the Linux Journal, it's focused on
using system emulators for running sound and music applications. I'm
reviewing recent releases of DOSemu 1.3.3, Xsteem, and the new WINE
0.9.6 beta.
I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the results with WINE.
AudioMulch runs nicely, as does Buzz, and I was even able to load and
run the latest demo of Band In A Box. However, the Finale demo wouldn't
install and NI's FM7 ran but produced no sound.
I'll probably use those three working apps for my profile, but are
there any other sound applications that users commonly run under WINE ?
Anything I should take a look at in addition to what I've already
selected ?
Btw, in case anyone ever thinks development of Linux audio resources is
too slow, consider that WINE spent the last 12 years in alpha stage. It
went to the beta devel stage just last year. Maybe in another six or
seven years we'll see WINE 1.0rc1. :)

Hi Dave,
NI's Battery runs fine for me under Wine from CVS. I *think* Geoff
Beasley uses Kontakt under some version of Wine, but it may be the
older 20040505//fst sort of solution. I'm not sure. This last 2 weeks
we've been working on trying to get Reaktor to run under CVS Wine. For
most of us it won't install or won't even start.
As for audio the Jack driver in Wine CVS isn't working at all so I
have to use non-realtime drivers (OSS, Alsa) and suffer with higher
latencies.
Sometimes I also run older versions of Acid Pro under Wine. Newer
versions (4.0, 5.0) don't run the last time I checked. (I should check
again...)
Truth in advertizing - mostly I'm sticking with Windows for Windows
audio programs. I do run iTunes and Quicken under Wine from CXO
though.

Thac has recently repackaged Wine 9.5 for PclinuxOS. I have been
messing with "VSThost" from the "savihost" site. VST host laods and
even
loads my more intensive VST's such as HyperCanvas in a fullt functional
manner. AND...with new this new WIne package, the JACK audio driver does
work and is patchable in Qjackctl. No "jack midi" but VST host and it's
loaded vst's can be talked to via ALSA midi "thru" port if ALSA and JACK
audio are mutully selected in Wine config. I'm useing the WineTools app
to do that.
So far all seems to work ok! :) Only issue is that VSTHost running
directly in Wine is sucking the resources up and running CPU at 99%. If
not for this, I would view this as a VERY useful new funtionality to my
audio toys! :)

grip is incredibly simple, just pop in a cd and it does the rest..no clicking even
necessary
gtkpod can then throw them on the ipod

I was asking whether there is a single GUI app where I
can insert a CD,
click 'Import CD', then click 'Update ipod' and be done. I don't
want
to worry about where my ipod is mounted.
All of the suggestions so far involve a lot more work than I am looking
to do.
thats way too much work for me. that's two clicks for a start.
i just mount an iAudio X5 (a definitely superior piece of h/w and
firmware than the iPod) on /mnt/iaudio (by dblclicking the logo that
shows up when i connect the USB cable; i had to script that part).
then i just run grip with a config file that tells it to
rip/encode/write to /mnt/iaudio/music/paul. ogg files, And You're Done.
then i double click on the icon again (which runs sync), and unplug it.

While I realise you said GUI, and that you probably arent looking for
good quality rips, I figured I would through this out there for anyone
that didnt know about it...

A Better CD Encoder
Rips with CDParanoia, Looks up the Info in CDDB, and Encodes in FLAC,
with one command, literally all I type in is abcde.
The catch is setting it up in the config file, but once that is done, if
you wanted you could set it up with ivman so that it woudl automatically
rip any cd you insert to your HD.
I believe it can be set up to use LAME instead of FLAC, I just dont do
MP3s so I havent checked it.

As for iTunes I use it only for playing their radio stations. My music
collection is ogg based and so far iTunes didn't seem to recognize it.
iTunes under Linux woll not, and probably will never, write CDs. Also,
under Crossover Office, where I use iTunes you are limited to a pretty
old version of iTunes, Ver. 4.9. This is a problem because much of the
music Apple is selling now requires Ver. 6 due to DRM changes. Bummer.
Since I run Windows here I buy my music using the Win XP box, burn a
CD, and then rip the CDs in Linux to add them to my collection. It's a
bunch of extra work since iTunes doesn't put any labeling on the songs
that my Linux rippers understand. I have to enter artist and songs by
hand. Bummer again!

We use Sound Juicer here, but it makes mistakes and we occasionally
have to rerip. Bummer number 3. I'm sure there are better ways. I'm
looking around for a 400GB drive so I can rerip my collection (about
800 CDs) in FLAC.

Hi Dave,
A bit of an update on the NI Reaktor status. Apparently one person
says the reason it's not running is that as of Reaktor 5.0 NI installs
some sort of kernel level driver. wine does not support any form of
driver loading, apparently, and hence while other NI apps currently
run under Wine, their flagship Reaktor does not.
I think this might bode ill for the future. Most likely this was
added to Reaktor for performance reasons. Should NI do more of this
we'll not have much future in Wine I fear until the Wine developers
attack this problem. (I'm not holding my breath...)

This doesn's seem to be the case for 'Reaktor Session' (based on
Reaktor 4)
The menu displays properly since wine 0.9.4.
The only bug that prevents it from beeing usable and propably run
perfectly with fst
is that the gui doesn't update. (fst 1.7, wine 0.9.6 winxp mode)
Kontakt 1.5.3 is pretty usable with fst

I have used GuitarPro 3 Demo version, for guitar tabulatures (export midi
from rosegarden and import it to GtP) and also printing some gp3 files
with screenshot (with Gimp) taken from Print Preview (Demo does not
support printing, but it does show the preview)

I've been using Renoise alot under wine:
http://renoise.com/
Renoise is a quite hefty tracker-style app with vst-support, automation
and a whole more.
This is on Mandriva, pretty much any version of Wine I've tried. It
works 100% as good as in windows, as far as I can tell, and most VSTs
work. In fact it *feels* faster than in windows, but I don't have
benchmarks to prove this. I guess it might be because Wine doesn't have
to load all the slow parts of windows that windows has...?
On Ubuntu it is way to sluggish and the sound is distorted, haven't yet
tried on Debian yet (it says it needs directx 8).
Now I guess the jack-outputs in Wine are working, but what one really
misses is the ability to sync with jack. I know there's a patch for
Soundtracker to do this, but as this provides no LADSPA support, nor
seperate jack-outputs, it gets kinda boring to work with. OTOH it would
be truly awesome if ST had this, and much preferable to running non-free
software in wine.

Just a note on that issue: I successfully installed the full version
of Finale 2000 some years ago (around the time we met on LADC in
Karlsruhe) using the Finale Install Disk. MIDI and printout weren't
working and some of the tool icons didn't display (although clicking
on them worked). Apart from that everything worked, even my own custom
made fonts. I also tried Finale 2001 and 2003 which didn't work. I
did't try more recent versions yet (I'm using lilypond now which has a
much nicer output than Finale or Sibelius).
