Hi list,
My friends who I recorded using 100% FLOSS this past winter/spring
finally 'released' the recording on their MySpace page:

"Formations" is the highlight from a songwriting perspective, in my
opinion (though we achieved some pretty huge drum sounds on
"Redemption Song").
Recorded/mixed/mastered with Jack1, Ardour, SWH, CAPS, TAP, Invada,
JConvolver, Jamin -- and probably others I'm forgetting -- on an Arch
Linux box. Thanks devs, for all the great tools!

Hello Sean,
Listening to Formations now. Do you also happen to have better quality
audio files, Youtube really messed them up. And so far I don't quite dig
the lead vocals (as opposed to the backing vocals, those are nicely
done), too mumbling and nasal for me, especially the couplets. The
melody is in my opinion a bit weak too. But that's all a matter of taste
and the music and composition itself are impressing, so is the quality
of the recording/mixing/mastering. Great stuff! My kind of genre too.
And the guys know how to use their instruments.
All in all, this is some of the best stuff I've heard so far completely
done with Linux, hats off!

Thanks for the comments Jeremy,
Yes I never felt the vocalist was the strongest part, but he's really
just getting started singing and I think he's got some potential if he
keeps working at it. Voices can change a lot over the course of a
couple years, certainly.
It looks like they're planning on setting up
bandcamp/purevolume/facebook pages too... I wonder which service will
eventually usurp MySpace? Facebook has come close I think, but it's
not quite the ideal band promoting tool from my very limited
experience. Maybe others have had more success with it though.

Oh and I will try to host some better files on my site, I agree
MySpace's player really mangles the audio.

I'm not sure about this. First, Facebook has reached 500 million
users. 500 million! That's a lot of potential listeners.
Second, every time I "fan" something or someone, it appears on my
wall. My friends can see it and click on it, even if only out of curiousity.
I've done it a lot of times, and I guess my friends too. It takes only a
couple of people that fans a group for it to spread exponentially
(hopefully :-)).
So, though I don't think it's the ultimate band promoting tool, I'd
add it to the "must have" things for them. Only my 2 cents, of course.

I've only listened to "Formations" (listening to "Errors" now),

I'm impressed. I specially like the intro, and the cleanliness of the

think I used the plate reverb, which is pretty nice in certain
settings.

JConvolver (previously known as "Jconv", which I used with the
frontend "Jc_Gui"): http://www.kokkinizita.net/ -- I also forgot to
mention that I use Fons's 4-band parametric filter plugin quite a lot.
