On a side note, there's a ruckus ("Ruckus? What ruckus? I didn't hear
any ruckus." -- The Breakfast Club) on slashdot.org about the
forthcoming X.org 6.8.0 release, which should include a few speed
enhancements (XDamage, in particular). I presume that any X speedup is
good news for us, as it gives audio apps a little more CPU time. Or is
something like that relatively negligible in light of more effective
CPU scheduling? Thoughts?
And on that note, my home audio machine is an old dual PII-350, which
is nice, but I can hear timing errors with a fairly simple track in
SkaleTracker. ('course, at the time I finally figured out how to make
the dang thing work I was running Gnome instead of my typical fluxbox.)
I'm now wondering if I can run it as a console application... or if
there are any other console-based apps worth checking into. Thoughts?

at our ugly faces for an afternoon. Lots of good places to drink and eat
nearby too.

Yes, Jesse Chappell is from the DC area also and plays bass in a band
called Phase 42. I've been part of DCLUG/NOVALUG/MALUG for years also,

Yes, Jesse Chappell is from the DC area also and plays
bass in a band
called Phase 42. I've been part of DCLUG/NOVALUG/MALUG for years also,
although haven't been to a meeting in years, since they stopped having
them at NIH.

Well, if were going to get that silly, I'm only about 45 minutes (at 5

without xruns!!
BUT, I have one Atlhon 2.8 with 256MB RAM and 40GB HD.
That machine run Debian and kernel 2.6.
And I have a lot, a lot of xruns and just I can't record sounds there!!
Somebody can help me explain what exactly is xruns and how can I get
information and solve this problem?!

just for test. In next week that machine will have one SB Audigy
Platinium.
I start jack with:
jackd -v -R -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 44100 -p 2048
But I tried othes options and continue with xruns.
I think my hdparm can't get this DMA information.
I'm getting the source code of hdparm to find some option in compilation.

First, just type mount and look at your mounted drives.
hdparm -tT /dev/hda
hdparm -tT /dev/hdc
Use whatever drive you are recording or playing audio from.

And this looks like your problem. Your disk throughput is so low that
you're probably not getting the bandwidth that you need. Probably DMA is
not turned on.
man hdparm will tell you more, but a very basic test setting you could
try could be something like:
hdparm -A 1 -m 16 -a 64 -c 1 -d 1 -u 1 /dev/hda
(read man hdparm to understand the meaning of each of these.)
Try setting -a up and down and look at the change in throughput. If
setting it lower doesn't hurt then push it down. If raising it helps
push it up. I don't know what type of drive you have but you should be
able to get anywhere from 15MB/S up to 50MB/S depending on your PC,
drive controller and the drive.

ooOOoo. those are really low. You should expect to be getting more on
the order of 20-30 MB/sec for buffered disk reads. I've never worried
about buffer-cache reads, doesn't really mean a whole lot for sustained
i/o in my experience.
I get upwards of 40MB/s at home on ATA133 drives. You need to tweak your
kernel config and/or set some dma and other options with hdparm.

between Steve and I it certainly means a stout. As for our
_brothers_ here in the Bay Area I'll leave it to them to define their

Mind you, when I did drink...Stout all on its own was a bit "thick". Used to
have what they call a portagaff. Equivalent of half stout and half seven up.

Well, it *should* be served slightly under room temperature.
However, a worrying number of pubs are now installing pump systems where
all the beer (lager, bitter, stout, ale, whatever...) is filtered and
chilled. Why brew bitter at all, if you then filter out all the taste,
fill it with gas and chill it so much you can't taste anything?
At least there are still a few decent pubs around. I graduated from York
University (that's the York in North Yorkshire, England) last year.
There's a tiny Sam Smith's pub in York (The Wellington) where a pint of
Sams (properly gravity-fed, obviously) costs £1.16! That's how to drink
when you're a student. Cheaper than the student bars, and much better
tasting.
Also, I've seen billboard advertisements recently for Fosters - which
claim that it is 'specially brewed to taste better cold'. Isn't that
just how all lager works? It tastes foul when it's warm, so you have to
chill it. Nice on the beach in the summer though.

Speaking of which I got my Alesis back from the menders the other day, so
I feel I can re-recommend them :) Was a blown capacitor, aparently I could
