Hi Jody,
I managed to compile a 2.6.12-rc2 kernel on amd64 running pure64/sid. I
used Andrew Morton's mm3 patch and your RT-rlimits patch. i installed
and rebooted into the new kernel.
I got the libpam packages (libpam0g-dev libpam-cracklib libpam-doc) with
apt-get from pure64 repository. Already had libpam0g, libpam-modules,
libpam-runtime.
How do I apply your patch to this PAM stuff. I don't really know where
to start.
Also, I couldn't find the sources, where should I look?

FWIW, I compiled and installed this kernel on debian-pure64 box.
Made edits in /etc/security/limits.conf giving audio a rt_priority of
80. Just running pam from debian-pure64.
I can start JACK in realtime mode -R as root but as normal user I
cannot start JACK using -R flag. If I start JACK as root other apps
complain.
Debian Q: What line do I put in /etc/apt/sources.list so I can apt-get
the source for the patched pam from
http://steamballoon.com/pam/debian-testing/ as described by Lee below?
I have tried various things but apt-get update complains about not
finding Sources.gz in the tree.

you still need the patched PAM as far as i know ... so long as you've
got that and the kernel correctly installed, it should work ... (and
make sure you've got an "audio" group and that you're a part of it).

Hey,
I don't think you can put that repository into your /etc/apt/sources.list list
because the dependencies are not solved. But you can install the deb's via
dpkg -i package.deb after downloading them.

Does anyone of you has problems with RT rlimits & audacity?
For me it doesn't work here. When trying to record or play something
with audacity it crashes.
PaHost_WatchDogProc: cannot set watch dog priority!

I haven't actually looked at the problem, but it appears that Audacity
tries to create its own watchdog thread, probably at RT prio 99.
This is a bug in Audacity! The whole point of the RT rlimit patch
setting an upper limit is so that a single, system-wide, root-owned
watchdog thread can run at a higher RT priority than any
"unprivileged" (I hate this term, because it's not "unprivileged",
it's
a new level of privilege between joeuser and root, a concept which many
UNIX people refuse to accept) RT process.
If Audacity really needs its own watchdog thread, it should not set the
RT priority to 99, since no sane distro would ship with that enabled.
