Hi,
Does anyone know of a program/plugin that can change the bit depth of an
audio stream in real time. So for example, you could feed the output of a
synth into it and have it come out at 8-bit.

The "Decimate" LADPSA plugin can do this -- it's in the Steve Harris
(swh) plugin set -- and JACK Rack will work just fine as a host for it.
It can do sample rate reduction, too.

If you don't really want it as an effect, but as a real bit-depth change,
you might try sndfile-convert. Besides that, Iknow, that Ecasound - and so
most certainly Ardour - can change the bit depth of incoming audio. Otherwise
the decimator plugin is a very good way to go.
