Does anybody know if it is possible to run a guest OS under KVM and
have the ins and outs of the virtual audio device presented to that
OS, interface with JACK on the host linux system?
I've done a little googling on this but couldn't find anything.
(mostly because "jack" is ambiguous, and "KVM" can mean a lot of
things)

Yes, but I'm not thinking about secondary linux machines inside the
vm. I'm contemplating the idea of having guest windows / mac systems
and being able to interconnect audio programs on those machines with
linux programs via jack.
I know the jackmp implementation can build and run on windows, but I
don't think that does a lot of good since windows software really
isn't jack aware. Jack has better integration within mac, but there
are still limitations.
I'm wanting to have the virtual sound devices presented to the guest
systems hook into an alsa loopback device which then acts as a jack
source / destination. However I'm not really sure if I can have jack
connect to a loopback device and the actual sound card at the same
time. Is it possible to pair a loopback device and a real device into
a virtual device and then connect jack to the virtual device? A more
direct solution would be to add JACK support to KVM. (Bonus would be
if JACK MIDI also interfaced with the virtual sound device to allow
MIDI based transport control)

In my experience getting a direct audio stream out of a vm is quite
painful if not outright impossible. I haven't had any success with
vmware or vitualbox in that regard.
Alternatively if you just want to run windows apps you should try with
wine as many apps work quite well and there is a native "jack-bridge"
for wine.

development to add support for JACK. Currently I believe it supports
ALSA, OSS, SDL and PulseAudio.

these tests are done with win7 in a VirtualBox
the host period size is 256. i guess using 1024 would be better.
these big latencies are not a real problem, when you use sequencers.
netjack1 provides a latency compensated jack Transport on the slave
side.
Note that there is an asio adapter for jack on windows.
so the missing part is getting the jack transport into a windows
app. i have written jack_trans2midi which generates midi clock.
so you just need some virtual midi device.

i needed to use a quite big latency due to some bugs and the socket
buffer size of windows being much too small.

I'm interested to see how KVM compares to VirtualBox. From what I
understand it's a bit faster / lower latency because it "runs closer
to the metal" compared to VirtualBox / Xen / VMware.

yup. me too. can it run win7 yet ?
i dont have a real choice, because win7 is the only OS, MS gave out for
free.
the basic problem with VMs is that they seem to have a single thread
emulating the hardware, so if a big gfx operation is in progress, the
network processing will get deferred.
(at least in VirtualBox)
maybe this doesnt happen with the VM audio.

No problems yet. I'm putting together a new system and had thought of
using Windows and Mac as guest VM systems under KVM for running things
that don't exist for Linux and/or don't work well with WINE. And I
wanted to see if anybody had tried routing the VM audio ins / outs to
JACK rather than directly to an audio sink.
Wanted to see if anybody had seriously tried this before I gave it a go.
using netjack and the master running at -p1024 seems to be working fine.
at least when i compress the audio, and there is not too much gfx memory
transfers.
i have put a windows build of jacknone-0.4 on http://netjack.sf.net
this is basically jack-1.9.4 with qjackctl and a fixed audioadapter.
it includes netone with celt-0.7 and jack_trans2midi which generates
midi clock... so you can sync your windows apps to jack transport.

I'm interested to see how KVM compares to VirtualBox. From what I
understand it's a bit faster / lower latency because it "runs closer
to the metal" compared to VirtualBox / Xen / VMware.
yup. me too. can it run win7 yet ?
i dont have a real choice, because win7 is the only OS, MS gave out for
free.
the basic problem with VMs is that they seem to have a single thread
emulating the hardware, so if a big gfx operation is in progress, the
network processing will get deferred.
(at least in VirtualBox)
maybe this doesnt happen with the VM audio.
