The first release of jkmeter is now available in the
usual place:

Also updates of japa and jnoise (mostly maintenance,
but see also below).

Jkmeter is a horizontal or vertical bargraph level
meter based on the ideas of mastering guru Bob Katz.

This is the type of meter you want for live recording,
mixing and mastering. It probably makes no sense to
use it on all tracks of a DAW, where keeping digital
level within limits is the main purpose of metering.
This release implements the K-20 meter. Future
releases will include the K-14 meter as well.
A K-meter displays both the true RMS level and the
digital peak level. The ballistics as defined by Bob
Katz are somewhat ambiguous. In this implementation
the RMS meter is about 15% faster than an VU, but
without the overshoot. This provides a good indication
of subjective loudness.
Instead of providing extra gain for the RMS level,
the K-meter displays it on the same scale as the
digital peak level, but puts the '0dB' mark and the
color change well below the OdB full scale level.
For the K-20 meter it is 20dB down, for the K-14
this is (surprise !) 14 dB.
To use the meter as envisaged by Bob Katz, you
should have a fixed monitoring level, adjusted
so that pink noise indicating 0dB on the meter
corresponds to 83 dB(C) (from each speaker) as
indicated by an sound level meter. Note the (C)

As of release 0.4.0, both japa and jnoise provide
a pink noise source at exactly this level.
The current release does not include the 22kHz
lowpass filter required for frequencies such as
96kHz and higher.

it would be nice to see something like this integrated into ardour, at
least in the output channels as an option. i'd like the ability to get
a standard reference level to compare against apart from the 'ok, it
has clipped now, turn it down a tad' level it currently shows :)

What should happen in Ardour is
* Promote the 'auditioner' to a 'monitoring
module'. The normal signal to connect to
your monitors should be this module and
not the master output.
* This monitoring module should have e.g.
the jkmeter, a post-meter calibrated
volume control, switches for L, R, and
mono, a correlation meter, etc.
* It should offer several switchable inputs.
The normal input would be the master output,
a second could be the output of a limiter
or mastering app following the master,
for broadcasting it could be the signal
returned from the continuity studio, etc.
* When a (not in-place) SOLO is active it should
auto-switch to this, same if you use the options
to audiotion a region, etc.
* This is also to place to put things like
intercom, talkback, etc, with auto-muting
of the monitoring of course.
I'm using such as thing as a separate app
that is also aware of ambisonic formats etc.
It makes a big difference in usability.

I was a little sceptical at first, but having read the article I think
it's a great idea. My main concern was the magic number '83 dB(C)',
which has somewhat vague, historic origin, but also I thought I would go
deaf at that reference level.
With two speakers, I guess that would be 86 dB(C). Quite interestingly,
extrapolating the OSHA noise exposure limits down to that level, a
person could endure that for up to 16 hours a day without hearing loss.
That would make it, effectively, the loudest safe level for someone
who mixes music all day, and so making the fullest use of the ear's
comfortable dynamic range.

As an experiment, I tried calibrating both of my monitor speakers with
-20 dBFS pink noise to 83 dB(C). Sound at that volume doesn't feel
comfortable to me. Perhaps I misunderstood something? Maybe I'm just
over-sensitive to that volume, perhaps because I have neighbours here,
don't have a house to myself, etc.
Under the K-20 system, it seems the maximum SPL when monitoring with two
speakers would be a scary 106 dB(C). Those monitoring levels would
force engineers to keep loudness down, or risk going deaf otherwise.
Presumably that would serve the intended purpose of the system, of
avoiding excessive loudness of recordings, but I think it carries some risk.
I think the K-14 system might be more to my own taste. I believe it
keeps the 83 dB(C) reference level, but with peaks up to 100 dB(C) in a
two-speaker setup. Sustained exposure for 2 hours even at the maximum
level should still be safe as per the OSHA limits, but of course that
level should rarely be reached anyway.
I'd very much like to hear how a K-20, K-14, or K-12 recording compares
to mainstream pop/rock/metal recordings. Perhaps the high reference
level would feel more comfortable with program material that isn't so
heavily compressed.
I'm also curious to know what sort of monitoring levels other people
have been using. I'd estimate that in the past I've been down to
something like 60 dB as a reference level, and resorting to headphones
when I felt more scrutiny was needed. This unfortunately seems
necessary here because I have other people living around me.
I'm looking forward to trying out the jkmeter implementation. And I
imagine a K-14 and even K-12 version would be very useful someday.

the maximum peak level. At that point the meter would
indicate +20dB, and be rather reddish. For anything
else the DPM indication is not a good indication of
the real SPL.
The K-20 scale is designed to be used for music that
has a natural dynamic range, e.g. classical or any truly
'unplugged' genre, and that is not or only very lightly
compressed. 0 dB on the meter should correspond to the
loudest parts of the music, and the average level would
be lower, i.e. well below 83 db(C). The 20 dB headroom
above this is for transient peaks that must be reproduced
without limiting or clipping.

The K-14 (and K-12) scales are for music that is more
agressively compressed and limited. If modulated to
average 0 dB on the K-14, that will be acutally sound
somewhat more loud than the uncompressed version using
the K-20 scale.
You seem to make the mistake that using a K-meter you
are supposed to use it as a DPM, trying to get out the
maximum. That is not the case, the idea is that the
loudest parts of you program should indicate around
0 dB on the RMS scale.

When trying to get an idea of how jkmeter 'reacts',
be careful when using 'canned' music. This evening
I compared two signals:
1. A broadcast from the BBC proms, relayed live on
Italian radio,
2. A piano recital recording which I made some
weeks ago, without any processing or gain
adjustments.
For both I adjusted gains so that the loudest parts
of the music would indicate between 0 and +3dB on
the jkmeter RMS level, i.e. the 'yellow' range.
This is how you would normally use such a meter.
For 1, the softest parts where at around -10 dB, and
the maximum DPL was -9.4 dB.
For 2, the softest parts where at around -20 dB, and
the maximum DPL was -3.9 dB.
This indicates that 1. was already being processed,
both manually (by the recording engineer gently
boosting softer parts - you'd expect more than 10
dB dynamics for Beethoven's first), and by peak
limiting (again not very intrusive, but essential
for broadcast).

I continued to watch RAI radio 3 on jkmeter...
The second part of the BBC proms concert was
Mahler's 'Das Lied von der Erde' in which
you'd expect even more dynamics. But again
the softest parts were around -10 dB and
digital peak level never went above -9.5.
This was followed by a recording from the
Perugia Jazz Festival. RMS levels between
-3 and +3 dB, and again no peaks above
-9.5 dB.
Sort of indicates how RAI processes the
music it transmits...

I've been using the excellent Jkmeter for a few weeks. Recently I gt
hold of a SPL meter so using Jnoise I was able to calibrate the
speakers volume to the suggested 83db(C). Similar to what Steven
mentioned in his email, to me that sound level felt very uncomfortable
(way too high) so following my perception (and without using Jkmeter)
I started mixing everything way too low (I confirmed this after
playing one of my pieces at a electroacoustic music concert setup). So
I'm also wondering, did I misunderstood something or I'm just too
sensitive? Is my SPL meter not working (it's a new and made by a
Galaxy Audio)? Does the existent room noise (computer fans, street
noise leaking through the window, measuring around 50dBC)
significantly affects the measurement? I'll appreciate any comments on
this.

Yes, the nostalgia meters look nice and warm in these
cold digital times... But they are no match for e.g.
the K-meter in practical terms. Maybe I should make
a K-meter using a 'mechanical' meter display...
I'm preparing a new release of the nostalgia meters.
This will have both the VU and PPM types in both
sizes, and also stereo correlation meters in both
styles and sizes.
I'd be happy to add an XXL version, if someone can
tell me how to make a PNG with an anti-aliased alpha
mask using cairo.
I replaced the scales, but the meter frames I'm using
are still those from Steve Harris' meterbridge. They
have this 'soft' mask which makes them blend nicely
into any background color.

I would do the PNG in The Gimp and save it with the
alpha mask. Cairo should be able to handle it.
The other possibility is to use Inkscape to create an
SVG image. That would scale well, but
might require to be buffered, for performance.
I will play around with the images the next days.
If I get anything usefull out of it, I will report back.

You're at least to third user to report that 83 dB(C) is
quite loud... Don't blame me - I didn't invent this figure !
I guess that if Bob Katz specifies this level, this may
reflect the quite high monitoring levels that are common
in commercial 'pop' studios. If you feel it is too high
there is IMHO no reason why you shouldn't adopt a lower
level as standard. The importing thing IMHO is to use a
*fixed* level. Play some music that you are familiar with,
adjusting the output level to indicate just above 0 dB on
the K-meter on the loudest parts. Adjust the volume control
to a level that feels right for you. Then, without touching
the volume control, output pink noise indicating 0 dB on the
K-meter, and measure the SPL. Write down this value so you
can revert to it later, even if the volume control has been
moved.
I'd be interested to know what sort of SPL levels you
adopt, along with the type of music you are listening
to.
Does the existent room noise (computer fans, street
noise leaking through the window, measuring around 50dBC)
significantly affects the measurement?

Hello,
I got some time to do some more testing on this and I found that for
the kind of music I make/listen (electroacoustic) a level of 77dB(C)
feels right to me. I tested with some known good recordings that where
hitting around 0 to +3 in the loudest parts, using Jkmeter as a K-14
level, and then adjusted the monitors gain to a comfortable level and
used jnoise (pink) to measure the level.

I've been using jkmeter and first I wanted to thank you for such a
useful tool. Today I was checking your web site for any updates (I'm
using the 0.1.0 version) and found that the application is not
available anymore. Did you remove it because there is something wrong
with its functioning?

Jkmeter is a horizontal or vertical bargraph level
meter based on the ideas of mastering guru Bob Katz.

This is the type of meter you want for live recording,
mixing and mastering. It probably makes no sense to
use it on all tracks of a DAW, where keeping digital
level within limits is the main purpose of metering.
This release implements the K-20 meter. Future
releases will include the K-14 meter as well.
A K-meter displays both the true RMS level and the
digital peak level. The ballistics as defined by Bob
Katz are somewhat ambiguous. In this implementation
the RMS meter is about 15% faster than an VU, but
without the overshoot. This provides a good indication
of subjective loudness.
Instead of providing extra gain for the RMS level,
the K-meter displays it on the same scale as the
digital peak level, but puts the '0dB' mark and the
color change well below the OdB full scale level.
For the K-20 meter it is 20dB down, for the K-14
this is (surprise !) 14 dB.
To use the meter as envisaged by Bob Katz, you
should have a fixed monitoring level, adjusted
so that pink noise indicating 0dB on the meter
corresponds to 83 dB(C) (from each speaker) as
indicated by an sound level meter. Note the (C)
- not (A) - weighting.
As of release 0.4.0, both japa and jnoise provide
a pink noise source at exactly this level.
The current release does not include the 22kHz
lowpass filter required for frequencies such as
96kHz and higher.

??? /me looks... indeed it's gone ! I must have removed it
accidentally.
There's no update yet, but there could be one soon, adding
K14 meters and stereo correlation metering.
