The [P]hase [H]armonic [A]dvanced [S]ynthesis [EX]periment, version
0.10.2 is ready for download (source tarball and FC6 RPMs) at:
http://sysex.net/phasex/
This release contains many fixes, most notably better support for
older GTK versions. PHASEX now works with GTK2 versions as low as
2.4.x, which should help most of the build issues on older distros.
Here's everything from the Changelog for this release:
* Fixed typos and omissions in parameter help file.
* Improved error handling and reporting in jack.c.
* Fixed JACK thread shutdown.
* Added Pete Shorthose's patch for saving memory with a single
knob anim.
* Added Lars Luthman's patch for improper style handling in
gtkknob.c.
* Fixed knob centering on middle click drag events.
* Cleaned up style and whitespace in gtkknob.c, added boilerplate.
* Added current midimap file to saved settings.
* Fixed build and runtime problems with GTK versions 2.4 to 2.8
* Fixed invalid setting of patch modified flag on startup.
* Updated error message for unhandled ALSA MIDI errors.
* Fixed passing of debug flags in configure.ac.
* Fixed detection of functions in libm.
* Added install of phasex.desktop to Makefile.am.
* Fixed uninitiailized varibable warnings in midi.c.
* Fixed missed internal update on boolean parameters first
switching to zero.
* Removed dead update_widget_val() in callback.c.
* Disabled engine side of audio ringbuffer locking (easier on JACK).
* Changed name of ALSA MIDI sequencer input port for readability.
* Added project roadmap.

Seems like some simple permission mistake. Which commands did you use to
build it?
I had no problems building it here on debian/etch...
However the gui seems quite sluggish. Is that a feature or...

I still get missed notes though (Xruns). I don't know if this is a Jack
problem, and it would be nice if some subsequent version might include using
Alsa as an alternative to Jack for audio out.

Try out version 0.10.3, as it has fixes for the file menu slowness
(which would cause xruns for me) and file dialog slowness (which
would cause xruns for others).
I've been thinking about ALSA audio support, since I'm planning to
rework the audio output system to handle other audio frameworks
(like DSSI) anyway. This is a little bit down the road (since
there's other optimizations that really need to be made), but as of
now ALSA audio is officially going on the TODO list.

My FC2 is using gtk2-2.4.14-2.fc2
I will try 0.10.3, and also the suggestions you made to David Adler, to see if
I can get it running a bit better.
The machine I have most of my music apps on, is 1.3Ghz Celeron, with 1GB RAM.
It has a load of distro's on it. FC1/2/3/4, and 5. Debian Sarge, Etch, and
Lenny. Kubuntu, Slackware 10.0, and Gentoo. I'll check out the gtk versions
on FC1, and Slackware 10.0, but both are using the 2.4 kernel, so I don't
know if that will create any problems when I build Phasex. Anyway it's worth
a go.

I had a similar experience half an hour ago. With
desktop-file-utils-0.11 it aborts installation, 0.12 doesn't mind if
categorys cannot be validated, which is a smarter behavior.
It complains about: Application, X-MIDI, X-Digital_Processing, X-Jack
and X-JACK and X-Fedora.
nice sounds - seems quite cpu-hungry, i get lots of xruns when polyphony
exeeds about three notes, but it might be related to my jack/priority
setup and not phasex.

Yes, I'll be the first to agree that there's still a lot of room for
optimization. For reference, on my 2GHz athlon-xp box, I just
barely get full polyphony (six voices by default) out of two
simultaneous instances undersampled to 48k with jack running at 96k.
Not great, but not bad for code that would give me a max polyphony
of 3 (requiring 3 instances) just a few months ago. Optimization is
already on the roadmap, and it's the first priority after the patch
selection system gets reworked a bit.
If you're maxing out your CPU, you'll get xruns no matter how fine
tuned your system is, so I wouldn't blame the jack/priority setup
just yet. If you have a 1GHz or below processor, I would recommend
editing src/phasex.h, changing NUM_VOICES from 6 to 3, and
recompiling. The configure script also supports an
'--enable-arch=' flag to get gcc to optimize for specific
processors.
Also, you may want to use the Mono MultiKey mode whenever you can
get away with it. This keymode uses only one voice and maps the
midi keys in play round-robin, in order of play, to the Midi Key
sourced oscillators.
BTW, could you give me some more details about your system, like cpu
type/speed, kernel, ram, sample rate, etc. I might be able to give
better advice.

Fixed in version 0.10.3. Actually, the installation of the desktop
file has been removed from the 'make install', since there seem to
be too many differences between distros and what they expect to
happen here. This was the last part of the install, so if you made
it this far, phasex and everything it needs all got installed.
