Julien, those controllers are a good point. The KORG nanoKONTROL is very
cheap, I own one since around 1 year, but never used it, anyway, it's
known to work with Linux. If the OP has got some iThingy, there's a
MIDI-Wi-Fi driver for Linux, unfortunately I still try to get Wi-Fi
working on my machine. I assume that Wi-Fi for other Linux users does
work ;D. FWIW, IIRC for mono Calf Monosynth and for poly Phasex can
emulate some vintage synth, but still not the output of CEM chips.
Hm? Mr. Smith still has got CEM chips, anyway, what happens if you need
to replace such a chip?
Full ACK Al. We only can buy second hand analog synth that are less old
and that might still last for a while. If needed I would try to get
something similar to a Minimoog out of my Oberheim Matrix-1000, but for
doing this I need to get my Atari ST working again or I need to run
Apple, Microsoft.
Since my TG33 is borked, I hope we get some soft synth for vector
control. The TG33 sounds without the vector control are less good than
many soft synth, just the vector control adds a special quality that
can't be produced with Linux soft synth, so theoretical it should be
possible to get an TG33 emulator that is better than the original. The
TG33 hasn't good samples and the FM synthesis isn't comparable to my
DX7, but the TG33's FM synthesis might be comparable to the output of
Hexter.
James, Whysynth is very useful, but completely no help to get something
Roland like. YMMV!

Phasex
What exactly can be done with an audio input to Phasex? I never tested
this.
Perhaps there's the opportunity to use a borked hw synth in combination
with Phasex.

It's pretty much like the audio input on an hardware analogue synth --
it runs your audio through PHASEX's filter and envelopes. You select the
audio input as your oscillator, hit a key, and the envelopes will open
and you'll hear whatever audio you're inputting, run through PHASEX's
filter.
PHASEX has a few envelopes and LFOs, and quite a few modulation options,
and some effects as well, so there's a lot of scope for creating audio
processing. It sounds good, too -- the filter's a bit unique, but it's nice.

Some of the folks that tinkered with Doepfer assembly kits in the 80s,
have cabinets repleted with Curtis chips. They're in the same situation
as Dave Smith. AFAIK Doepfer doesn't use CEM anymore, Google found
German links like "High-end without CEM" (translated), about Dieter
Döpfer. I didn't read it.

The Doepfer Dark Energy used the CEM 3394 filter, which is why it's been
discontinued -- get one whilst you can. Unavailability of this chip will
affect some current Doepfer A100 modules as well.
DSI synths don't use traditional CEM chips, but a custom production run
done a few years ago specifically for Dave Smith.
To the OP: there are emulations of Rolands out there, how good they are
I wouldn't know, but running VSTi's doesn't necessarily mean running
Windows -- many work fine with a VST host running under Wine and Wine-asio.

PS: While it should be possible to get copies of ROMs contents, we could
burn to EPROMs, there's still the issue to get special designed chips of
the synth vendors. A friend already bought survival kits from Wine
Country in the end of the 80s or beginning 90s for his Sequentials, IIRC
without the guarantee that the survival kits aren't borked.
But even when survival kits existed and where less expensive, they
already were expensive. How many musicians are financially covered?
I'm quiet now, I need to control my butler, since the Lamborghini should
be clean, when I drive to the 1-€-Job (special German jobs, more than
30hours/week, official not more than 30hours, for less than
900,-€/month, less money if you're sick, but you need to pay for medical
care). Alternatively to such jobs German audio engineers and musicians
could pollute the world with loudness war auto-tune mixes, or do similar
bad jobs, like playing grotesque evil Jazz on the trumpet, to get more
money.
