Hi listmembers,
Looking over the info here:

It looks as if the Delta 1010LT has 2 XLR inputs, whereas the Delta 1010
only has 1/4" jacks.

I have 1" condenser mics (AKG 3000B) which require phantom power. I
assume neither card provides it.
Can owners of these cards confirm my assumptions? What recommendations
would you give for me to purchase.
We have a 5 member band, two instruments have built in pickups, the harp
has a 1/2" condenser mic (I'm not sure if it is battery powered or
requires phantom power), all of the other instruments need miking
(Uilleann, Great Highland and shuttle bagpipes, anglo concertina,
fiddle, whistles, flutes, bodhran, bones and egg rattle).
I am building a box with Gentoo Linux intended for recording and
editing.

Correct. This is one of the reasons that I purchased an ST Audio
DSP2000 C-Port (same chipset as the Delta cards). The DSP2000 C-Port
has a pair of phantom powered XLR connectors with gain controls on the
front of the unit. Of course the other inputs are unbalanced consumer
level. There are always trade offs. Since buying the unit I've
purchased a number of tube mic preamps and compressors. If you plan on
doing this you might not need the mic preamps built in to the unit.
I've been very happy with the DSP2000 though.

Pricewise, that's certainly not worth it. The Delta 1010LT is about
$200, and the DSP2000 is at least $450. You can buy a lot of really
good preamps with phantom power for under $250. Heck, I went ahead and
bought a Beringer Eurorack UB802 6 channel mixer for $50 because it
sounds clean and isn't much more expensive than the average preamp.

I don't have either of these cards, (I use an RME) but I wouldn't depend
on the built in preamp for recording regardless of the card. I'm not
making any claims as to weather it can handle it or not, but you will
generally get better mic handling with a nice external preamp.
I always try to focus my budget primarily on nice mics, DIs and preamps.
They will by far have the biggest influence on the quality of the final
product.

Just a thought, but you might want to look into getting a mixer. The
Mackie ones are pretty nice; I have a 1604, and run the four submaster
outs into the four inputs on my Delta 44. It works out pretty nicely
for the most part.

of coffee on it. I haven't had the courage to turn it back on as it had
power on when I did it and the leds pegged. I guess it's time to get
out the screwdriver and give it a good cleaning out and see if I cooked

It seems like it should be able to run again, though cleaning it a bit
would be a good idea. And if you're going to keep beverages next to
your equipment again, I'd advice looking into some kind of cupholder or
protective plastic sheath. :-)

I am on morphine for pain and I was looking at my cup sitting next to my
Linux box and thinking, boy, that stuff makes me clumsy. I better move
my coffee to the other side before I fry my mobo or drives, so I moved
it over to the other side. My first reach knocked the cup off the
table and got the preamp and even my speaker amps left rear channel. :(
I hate to drink out of plastic, but I am thinking about getting one of
those big bottomed thingys that are supposed to be spill proof, but...

You should use the automatic cup holder that comes with your
computer - you know, the one that slides in and out when you push that
little button ;-)

Phil,
The 1010LT has 2 balanced XLR inputs and the remainder are unbalanced. I
have this one and it is great for what I need. I have a stereo preamp
hooked into the XLR inputs.
The 1010 appears to have 8 balanced in/out using TRS connectors instead
of XLR inputs. I understand that this is a very nice board. Both cards
are well supported with ALSA.

This was a quick and dirty recording with crappy mics (Shure 58? He was
in a rock and roll band and didn't consult me before buying mics) and a
little clipping. It was done under the popular OS and CoolEdit96 and a
SBLive card.
After I got my mikes, my son recorded and produced the samples found
here and he used Cakewalk Music Creator 2003 and the SBLive soundcard.

Curently, I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in the Linux box until I can
afford the M-Audio board.
The Behringer has 2 1/4" unbalanced outputs, so I was considering the
1010 with the breakout box in order to get the audio stuff outside the
noise in the computer. I hope it will kick MSFT in the buttocks when I
get it going.

I don't own a Delta but i'm pretty sure they don't offer phantom power
on their inputs. Even if they did, i wouldn't trust them to capture the
sound of a mic; as line inputs they're fine, but a mic is a different
story.
Anyway, i want to purchase a Delta 1010 myself and I'm thinking to get a
mic preamp for it. Since the card is about $450, i figured a $125...150
preamp would be just what the doctor ordered.
I've been told that the Studio Projects VTB1 is one of the best preamps
in that price range. It's ugly, but that's a sign that the $$$ were
invested where it matters: the circuits, not the looks.

Since that preamp doesn't have a compressor, and since I'd very much
like to compress before the sound hits the digital domain, I'll have to
get a compressor too. At this moment, the RNC1773 looks like the best
bet - I've heard real hard-core professionals giving it high praise

$2000", etc.)

Sorry, I forgot. I can confirm that there is no phantom power on the
1010LT. According to specs, the 1010 has no phantom power. In my case,
the preamp supplies power, although phantom power units are relatively
inexpensive.
I own 2 RNCs and they are great. I use them for tracking as an effects
loop off of my preamp. Yes they are ugly, but they are really quiet and
easy to operate. They are a great value for the money.
For miking acoustic instruments, a great preamp may be a sound
investment. You may want to consider spending more resources on this.
Pendulum Audio makes a very good stereo acoustic preamp.

Agreed. Gentle compression can really help, even when tracking. The RNC
lets you do gentle compression very easily and very cheaply!

Hey Phil,
I'd recommend the M-Audio Audio Buddy
(http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudioBuddy-main.html). It's a two
channel mic preamp with phantom power and balanced, 1/4" TRS outputs.
They're low-noise, transparent sounding, and inexpensive. I picked one
up new from Guitar Center for $50 (on sale). They're usually about
$80.
I've looked at 4+ channel mic preamps, and they seem to be either
really cheap (Nady, SM-Pro) or way too expensive. The other option,
as other have mentioned, is a compact mixer (Yamaha, Mackie,
Soundcraft, etc.). I would look at one with 8 mic inputs, each with
an Insert jack or direct out.

batteries (since I couldn't find appropriate current limiter resistors
in my junk box.
