Greetings all,
I'm planning on ordering a laptop this weekend for writing music and
such while away from my desktop.
Now, while I'm budgeting for around about 500 euro, my gut tells me
that I won't be getting fantastic hardware for that money.
"But wait Andrew! We don't know what you'll be using this for!" I hear
you say, so I'll just quickly outline what I plan on doing:
In short, I don't need a tremendously amazing audio card, with high
quality mic preamps coming out its wazoo, as I'll be working
exclusively in the digital domain
(linuxsampler/bristol/zyn/yoshimi/ams) via an externel midi
controller.
In addition to that, I'd rather not have a windows OS pre-installed on
it, but rather it be powered by linux from the get go (ideally) or
just a hunk of pre-assembled hardware.
RAM I guess is a moot point, the more the better.... but 1GB would be
a minimum..
Should I provide more info, or is what I'm asking outside the range of
what's commercially available? (I dread the thought of having to build
a laptop from scratch, to be perfectly honest)

500 Euro + A reputable dealer on Ebay... and you'll probably
be able to get a used laptop that's pretty nice. Sometimes,
you might want to buy a replacement battery, though.
In the used laptop market, Thinkpads have a very good
reputation.

For <500€ you can get lower-range (new) laptops with suitable properties at
least from hp (I am helping a friend buying one of those currently).
Or you can get a netbook (dell and probably some other manufacturers have some
with linux installed) that also does what you need. If you are unsure about
whether the system can take the synth-load, ask Atte about his setup...
In short: For that price range you can get about anything. Just ask the dealer
(or the manufacturer) if it works with linux. If they can't say, don't buy.

Hey all,
Many thanks for the replies, I'm actually quite inclined to go for the
Indamixx Pro 12.1 laptop, for the sheer sake of simplicity, i.e
everything works out of the box.
I had a horrible time configuring my brother's wireless USB device
using ndiswrapper on two occasions. By the end of it, I managed to get
it working out of a pure fluke!
With the Indamixx pro, I'd imagine that the hardware drivers would be
all configured and working properly (with perhaps a bit of fiddling
with connecting to the wireless network at home here...), so I could
get some of the software update to date (linuxsampler cvs, rosegarden
and bristol would be my top three 'to-dos', for better or worse. :P )
