Hi,
I think the problems you described are fairly common with the Multiface. I have never
gotten PD to work with a Multiface. XMMS does not work well, either, nor does mplayer
(oss emulation is really no good, and it mplayer will not play through alsa with this
card). Alsaplayer will work pretty well (better through Jack on my system), but I had to
disable cddb-lookup because it would stall with CD's it didn't recognize. Xine
will not work, and with the particular incarnation of kernel/drivers I'm using
(ccrma), Audacity has been slowed to a complete crawl (it takes between 1 and 2 minutes to
start up, and 1-2 minutes after you enter a command to execute it) - hopefully this will
change when I upgrade. I suspect a lot of this is because the drivers are relatively new.
I think Thomas Charbonnel (sp?) wrote the HDSP drivers (kudos), so he may welcome bug
reports.

The HDSP operates in non-interleaved mode, which many applications can't
use.
I remember reading about it on the rme site too (rme-audio.com), but
I cannot find the relevant pages.
So basicly some applications have to be adapted to work together with
the rme hardware ... (that probably includes xmms and pd ?).

When I was using the HDSP9652 I didn't have any problems with specific
applications not working with the card, although I did at times have to
use the plug interface if an app (like xine) couldn't do a frequency
conversion itself.
The only limitation I ran into was that I had to use a frames/buffer
value of 2. The RME cards wouldn't accept anything except that. I could
run the buffer size anywhere from 64-4K to change the latency based on
what I needed.

It started out simple enough... all I wanted to do was have rosegarden play
a midi file :( But it does not, can not, will not. The more I look into
it, the more obtuise everything becomes. Can anyone shed any light on
these
mysteries?

MYSTERY #1: How does timidity know what port to use and what
instruments to
use? I never told it what bank, etc.
I start timidity as an alsa-seq
$ timidity -iA

I test it...
$ aplaymidi -p 128:0 /a-train.mid
nothing, until I hit Control-C, then I hear one note

(timidity seq reports)
Playing time: ~13 seconds
Notes cut: 1360
Notes lost totally: 0
However
$ aplaymidi -p 128:0 /Blew.mid
works.
MYSTERY #2: Why do some midi files play or some not play? At other times I
have started the timidity seq like..
$ timidity -iA -B2,8 -s 44100 --realtime-priority=100 --sequencer-ports=2
This will play the a-train.mid file, OR freeze my system dead cold!
MYSTERY #3: What is timidity's default realtime priority?
So, I have the timidity alsa-seq working for at least one midi file.
Now I startup rosegarden
$ rosegarden
or
$ rosegarden --existingsequencer

I go to Studio->Manage MIDI Devices->MIDI Software Device (128:0 Timidity
port 0 (write) and I import GM.rgd. The device name changes to "General
MIDI
Synth"
I then right-click on track one and assign it to "General MIDI Synth #1"
and in the instrument parameters select Bank=General MIDI,
Program=35:Picked

which is bad because jack, so far, has only succeeded in preventing any
sound to work in any manner. I just want rosegarden to work with midi as I
have given uip on jack after about 70 hours of frustration with jack. I'll
get back to jack when I have a few months of free time.

option in any of the docs I have on jack
However, when I quit rosegarden, I hear a single note play!!
I then test again with

nothing, except when I hoit control-c, then I hear a single note.
Appearantly, my timidity port has been fubared by rosegarden (or something)
If I restart the timidity server aplaymidi works again.

How do I load sounds into this external midi? When I run rosegarden it
shows that there are banks of instruments available but no sound comes out
when I play "aplaymidi -p 64:0 /Blew.mid"
MYSTERY: Some midifiles, when loaded into rosegarden have "Imported MIDI"
in channel 1, but nothing there, and things like 'Rhythm' assigned to MIDI
external device #10[D]" (there's that 10[D] again). n In this example, the
file that have this information do not play with aplaymidi

Rosegarden consists of two processes, "rosegarden" (the GUI) and
"rosegardensequencer" (the real-time sequencing process). Normally
the GUI starts and stops the sequencer process itself; the
--existingsequencer flag tells it to use a sequencer process that's
already running. It's really only of interest for debug purposes.
DCOP is a protocol (part of the KDE libraries) that Rosegarden uses
to communicate between the two processes, so this message is telling
you that there is no Rosegarden sequencer already running for
Rosegarden to talk to. So it will in fact go ahead and start one.

Channel 10 is used for percussion (drums, hence the D) in GM.
Rosegarden doesn't particularly care about that but it does mark
channel 10 separately just in case you do.

Am I right in guessing you have a very new version of JACK, say 0.75
from CVS? If so, then Rosegarden didn't start JACK -- JACK did.
Rosegarden will happily run without JACK if you only want to do MIDI
and score, but it always tries to attach to the JACK server first and
only goes ahead without it if that fails. With a recent version of
libjack, that attempt to attach to JACK actually causes jackd to
start up.
That's a problem that we hadn't really anticipated (with Rosegarden).
There is no command-line flag to tell it not to use JACK, just
because we'd assumed the JACK attach would only succeed if you were
already running jackd, in which case you'd probably want it.

The options you see are the defaults hardcoded into libjack, they
don't come from Rosegarden. I think -T is a magic thing that tells
jackd to exit when the last client does.

This is an external MIDI port -- such as a gameport on a soundcard.
It's no use unless you have a piece of MIDI hardware plugged into it.
Some soundcards seem to report an external port even though there's
no port physically on the card, in which case (I think) it's totally
useless.

This comes from JACK CVS 0.95.x, not the latest release 0.94.0. JACK
will probably evolve to provide better client control over this new
feature. For now, setting JACK_NO_START_SERVER in your environment
prevents the server from being started automatically.

Does it not play the file, or are you simply not getting any sound output?

Probably that It's a drum track rather than a synth track.

Ah, AFAIK, if you want to get MIDI driven sound out of Rosegarden4, you have
to use a softsynth via Jackd. Use Qjackctl to start Jackd, then start up the
softsynth you want to use and then Rosegarden. It won't take months to
figure, I know it can seem daunting at first, but you really are going to
want it working from the sounds of things.
However, when I quit rosegarden, I hear a single note
play!!

No, I doubt it. If you're using ALSA, only one application can have access to
any device. It's just in use - the port still works & is still recognisable I
think you'll find :-)

You can't, it's not a SoundBlaster. You need to use something like fluidsynth.

This is normal no? - channel 1 contains the original MIDI info or something
like that. It's normal to assign the Rhythm track to #10, It's a handy
convention, why it should be an external device, I don't know, I can't see
from here :-)
