Hey all,
so i'm in a band now, and our first jam session was AWESOME. Fantastic
stuff. I'm keen on recording our next jam and wondered how i should do
it.
4 band members,
Instruments are:
Vocals 2 female, one male and one other guy who might sing.
Acoustic Rhythm guitar
Acoustic Lead guitar
and a drummer playing tambourine and bongos and a stomp box kick drum :)
I have an echo gina 3g, one condenser mic and one cheap crappy dynamic
mic. So far i'm just using the condenser. If everyone is in the same
room is it worth while micing everyone?
My gina takes in ADAT, should I buy an ADAT 8X mic preamp and a few
mics? Would it be better just to have a couple of mics randomly about
the room? Would you get wacky phase effects? It would be great to get
a good stereo mix easily. We can record one instrument at a time and
multi track fine with ardour at the moment, i just mostly want a good
way to capture our jam sessions so we can listen how it sounds.
If mics is the answer what should i grab? Cheap is fine.

Simplest thing to do is the Zoom H4 (or H4n or H2 ... pick your price
point). I have some recordings on my site. Easy and clean.

I've got the H2. It actually has one advantage over the H4 - it has 4
mics that you can record to at the same time. It's 90 degrees front and
120 degrees back. It does a pretty good job for a great price.

instead of my computer and ardour? I was asking what mic configuration
I should use. Ie how many mics...

I would guess that after a few sessions, you'd get a good idea of
where everyone should sit and where you should place the mics. Maybe
you'd even improve your own dynamics.

If the mics are well positioned and angled and the gain levels are
correct then you can get a decent live sound.
I enjoy setting up a desk and mics if I am definitely going to record
something for future production use but if it's just to get a snapshot
of the session for post rehersal study then 1 mic in the center of the
room is usually enough. Chuck another one on the kick and snare and one
for vocals.
If you really need to get a polished product, redo each instrument
individually after the initial recording using the master as a time base
or got to a professional studio and pay them to do the hard work and
make sure your sound is captured cleanly. You can get the masters from
them for working with on your own editor.

Hopefully the preamp will turn up today so I can try recording the
band. The Beyerdynamic mic's sound fantastic so far. They sound really
clear, crisp and balanced recording my Collings acoustic. From a quick
comparison I think I prefer them over my much more expensive Stedman
large diaphragm condenser. Though I think the Stedman suits vocals
better.
I have one art tube MP preamp, Should I run the vocal mic through
this or will the solid state sm pro pre's sound much nicer anyway?

Actually, I'd do something totally different- just use the condenser, in
MONO. That's right, mono; which worked beautifully for the Beach Boys, most
of the Motown artists, all the early blues and R&B recordings. And mix it
by moving the position of the players relative to the mic. The advantage
here is that it's utterly simple, which will allow you to concentrate on the
songs and the performance. If you can achieve an acceptable sound this way,
then you can (carefully!) add more mics as you go. Many, many classic
recordings were done this way, and since your recording medium is
up-to-date, the fidelity will be superior to any of those. You won't have
any phasing problems either. Drums in back, vocals up front, guitars
somewhere in between. It works!

Because, unless you have a card that handles multiple inputs, you'll
be better off with the 4 mics in the H2. I use 8 mics when I record my
band - two condenser overheads for the drums, 1 snare mic, 1 kick mic, 1
mic on bass, 1 mic on each of two guitars. The overheads are an AKG and
a Marshall condenser. The kick is a cheap AKG kick mic (I don't
remember which one), a cheap AKG on the snare, SM57s on the guitars and
bass. My sound card is an ST-Audio DSP 2000 C-Port with 10 inputs.
