Well, I guess many of us would be using a P2P client apart from that
command-line client nevertheless. And configuring mldonkey for not
eating all your RAM is obvious to me (simply lowering max sources per
file to 200 or even less).

music-related files.
I think that whatever we choose, it should be easy for most users to get
it installed. There are a lot of people who just want to use their PC
and the applications there, and don't want to have to download seven
libraries and compile everything from souce. Maybe no one on this list
minds, but we would really limit the possibilites to restrict it to just
us. Just my 2 cents..
If I had the bandwidth and disk space (or money to fund it), I'd prefer

lot more convenient - if James is offline, and he is the only one who is
still sharing MetallicDrumBeats.tar.bz2 which I wanna get, then I'm out

on something like this, but I remember seeing something on SF that was
not an application, but a website for free stuff. I can't remember
exactly what it was, but it might be possible that they would host it
happily?

be fairly simple...i might even write something lke this up for my own use soon, and of
course will put up the source..

A useful feature, if we're going to integrate it into apps, would be
previews - on-the-fly low quality ogg encodings of files? It wouldn't
be fun having to wait for something to download only to find it wasn't
what you expected.

Indeed freesound is very nice, it supports tags and it's very fast to
browse. The pity is that it only supports wave files, where we'd like
(I guess) to share also software synthesizer programs, soundfonts,
etc.
P2P was ok for me because I thought it wasn't important having to wait
a week to get something interesting. Obviously if you all prefer the
want-it-now approach a web site is fundamental, but then you have to
pay for the hosting and the bandwidth...
For me labelling the files as [LAU] and putting them in my shared
folder is enough. Later if a web site wants to monitor [LAU] labbeled
files and put ed2k links on a web page then great!

Ahhhh. That's different!
Then what we probably want is something like freesound. I thought
that it would be great, but most of it just turned out to be people
making silly noises and then uploading hundreds of copies of it
through different filters.
If we could do something similar, with some kind of quality control,
it might be better.
And I don't mean complicated quality control. Maybe something like
having to submit a track you've made before you get an account and
then you're free to upload.
I quite liked the P2P thing, especially since Circle has a web front
end, too. It would solve Folderol's storage problem at the same time.
