Nigel,
Yes, I am using KDE. I have now read the alsactl man page, and run (as
sudo ) 'alsactl store'
When I restart X/KDE (ctrl-alt-back) my sound cuts off as KDE
initializes, indicating that the capture channel is unmuted.
But if I then bring up a console and run 'alsactl restore' - even as a
normal user, sound output returns.
(I am running mpd at bootup, so it is pretty obvious when the sound
stops / starts)
As an aside, mpd rocks for playing mp3 files. I usually 'control' it
with phpmp from my web browser.

PS: I have to send to the list from mutt, because google mail seems to
put 'questionable headers' into my messages, which gets 'em suspended.

Hi Lee. You may well ask. Alsactl restores the settings, and then KDE with
it's "restore volumes at startup" changes them to what was there when you
first installed Alsa. It would be much better if KDE could be convinced to
leave the "restore volumes at startup" unchecked. It would save a lot of

Well, on my Planet/RH9 sys there is a checkbox in KDE Control
Center under Sound and Multimedia, Sound System, Mixer that is
labeled "Load volumes on login". It's checked on my machine.
But I really don't know how it functions ie what it does. aRTs
is the default for KDE and my machine does not start arts on
KDE startup (check box on the aRTs tab is not checked). I rarely
turn this sys off or reboot and rarely logout of Xwindows; maybe
this evening I'll try to see if the Loadvolumes check box does
anything with arts not running.
I use Qamix version 0.0.7; it doesn't have a save-settings menu
item or button.
I have used alsactl for save/restore while using KDE.

Hi. Marv. I don't believe that Arts being started or stopped has anything to
do with the mixer config. RH9 as you say has the KDE mixer config in control
centre/sound & multimedia/mixer, as has FC1 which uses KDE 3.1.4-9.legacy,
and FC2 which uses KDE 3.2.2-8.FC2. Debian Sarge/Etch which uses KDE 3.3 has
now moved the mixer config to Kmix, as has Gentoo which I have KDE 3.4 on.
Kmix does not allways install with the menubar showing. You have to right
click on the main Kmix panel with the sliders, then have the option to show
menubar, then settings/Kmix configure, and you have access to this annoying
"load volumes at startup" checkbox. All the best. Nigel.

IMHO this illustrates a key difference in the Gnome/KDE philosophy where
Gnome is clearly superior. When confronted with a problem like saving
mixer settings the KDE people seem to go for whatever is easiest to get
working, while the Gnome people will wait for a *correct* solution, even
if it means KDE gets $FOO feature before them.
Any software engineer worth their salt will tell you that the easiest
cheapest solution is almost always WRONG.

Hi Dave. I don't know if you've fixed it, but if not try the following. Later
versions of KDE. 3.3, 3.4 have a menu bar on Kmix with a settings menu item.
If the menubar's not there, right click on Kmix, then show menubar. Next.
Settings/config Kmix, and theres probably a checked box for "load volumes at
startup" . Just uncheck the box. Earlier versions of KDE like on FC1 have the
mixer config stuff in. Control centre/sound & multimedia/mixer. And the load
volumes at setup checkbox is there. HTH . Nigel.
