If I rip the same CD on two different occasions, would I be right to expect
the two sets of tracks to have the same md5sum, or is ripping not that
precise?
I've been using rubyripper and have a difference between two attempts on
the same CD, though rubyripper doesn't report any problems, and each chunk
is matched twice for each rip.
The CD drive is fairly new.

It depends on the CDROM drive. It is reasonable to expect you can
find a CDROM that will produce consistent rips. The differences are
usually the exact starting offset.

Ok, interesting. I thought that many don't rip the complete CD, but just
the tracks and then add constant pauses between the tracks, while other
rip the whole CD as it is or you can chose between both methods. Isn't
that correct?

A digital copy, is a digital copy, is a digital copy. They can fail, but
usually they don't fail. It's more likely that you e.g. ripped one CD
one-to-one and for another CD you perhaps automagically add pauses
between the tracks.

usually they don't fail. It's more likely that you e.g. ripped one CD
one-to-one and for another CD you perhaps automagically add pauses
between the tracks.
