at least in debian, the ldconfig command will update the list of all the
libraries which are installed in the paths mentioned in
/etc/ld.so.conf
it is often so, that on a newly installed system, there will be only
/usr/lib listed...
i had to edit this file manually in order to use ldconfig properly.
