There was a recent discussion here about people using Debian. Frustrated
with RedHat, I almost went with Debian, but Gentoo caught my eye. So far
I'm really happy with it, though I'm having some difficulties getting
Ardour set up. The great thing about Gentoo is that you compile and
optimize the entire distro on your computer. The performance boost
between Redhat 8.0 (my old distro) and Gentoo is easily noticeable. Plus
their optimized kernel includes the low-latency patches.
Are there any other Gentoo users out there? If so, I'd be interested in
setting up a Gentoo-specific audio listserv to avoid flooding this list
with distro-specific issues. Anyone else interested? (Of course I'll
remain a loyal linux-audio-user subscriber!)

Well, hello, hello! ;-)
You just found a fellow gentoo user starting up with music on linux. There is
an ongoing thread in the gentoo forums ("Gentoo musicians" in the Gentoo Chat
forum) where we are figuring out some things and getting to know who is who.
I saw earlier today another post in the multimedia forum regarding Ardour.
Currently I am installing music software by hand on its own separate /opt
dir, to have more control (and not depend on when .ebuilds are released) so I
don't know of any specific troubles on the ebuild versions. So if you plan on
that list, drop a few lines there and get more people on it.

I believe that Chris Cannam, one of the Rosegarden developers, is running
Alsa and Jack on Gentoo. I looked at Gentoo but wasn't ready to take such a
leap. Maybe joining the Rosegarden Users list would get you some more info.
Rosegarden is very cool if you're looking for a MIDI environment.

Not so -- I'm not sure where that came from, as I've never even
seen Gentoo. (I use SuSE at home at the moment, and have been a
happy Debian user in the past.)
We have had the odd message from Gentoo users on the RG lists
though, if only reporting some compile problems (Gentoo seems to
use a pretty recent gcc) which I believe we fixed.

Hi, another gentoo user here. But I had terrible results with the
patched kernel and went back to Vanilla + LL. Other than that things
are running smoothly.

Hi Jason,
I switched this summer from Debian to Gentoo, and so far I am extremely
happy with it. I'm running a vanilla 2.4.19 kernel + XFS, ll and preempt
patches, plus a patch by Ivan Kokshaysky (included in 2.4.20) fixing the
buggy cardbus/pci bridge handling on my Toshiba laptop that prevented me
to use my RME HDSP card. I'm running a patched version of alsa9rc5
through the emerge system (custom .ebuild file including Marcus
Andersson's HDSP cold boot bugfix). All the other apps are manually
installed (jack from cvs, jackified pd, ardour, jMax 4.0 - with
preliminary jack support).
The only problem I encountered trying to build ardour was an incorrect
libsndfile version (ardour needs libsndfile>=1 and the default Gentoo
one is 0.28).
Maybe we could start some work to provide ebuild files for up-to-date
and rocking audio apps on Gentoo. I'm definitely interested by the
Gentoo specific ML.

I am also a Gentoo convert. Making ebuilds for this stuff sounds like a good
idea to me.

I have a toshiba laptop too (satellite 4310). Could you enlighten me about the buggy
cardbus/pci bridge handling?
I run a Mandrake 8.2 with 2.4.16 kernel + morton patches and I'm happy with it, mainly
for live recording and "soundtrackering". I don't run any RME HDSP card so
maybe it's not useful for me, but I will be pleased to be less dumb :)

no I/O port) came from the fact the kernel did not handle correctly
certain correctly certain types of intel PCI bridges (among which the
82801xx series that is found on my Toshiba Satellite 3000-514 laptop, I
don't know what's on your 4310).
