Hey folks,
I'm not an audio engineer and i don't even play one on TV. I am a music
lover/audiophile who wants to learn about engineering so bear with me here.
I understand that when you hear something in the center of your sound stage
it's because the sound is equally loud in both channels and in phase.
If you hear it spread evenly across the sound stage or even "everywhere in
front of you" the sound is equal in both channels and out of phase.
I heard a recording the other day where a singer was equally loud in both
channels, but she was not center stage. Instead there was one of her in each
channel.
How is that done? Thank you.

Hi!
I believe you would a) Just record her twice and she'll never EXACTLY do the
same, so result achieved. You take some shoRT stereo-delay or you take one
recording, double it and nudge it, whatever that is. There a doubler in the
TAP plugin suite. And in ecasound you could use -etd (stereo delay). That's
all I know, which may work. Probably there's more and more sophisticated.

I have heard the "hole in the middle effect" when the speakers are
out of phase.

perhaps your speakers are out of phase? Or it was mastered out of phase
or with a delay or chorus effect to sound like that.

Very small (a few milliseconds) time delay one one channel.

Probably double-tracking. The same thing recorded twice and panned
extreme left and right in this case.
