You need to start with 2.6.8, not 2.6.8.1. There were probably some

Yes, because the problem is not that your gcc is too old but that it is
too new. Try it with gcc 3.3.

Yes, because the problem is not that your gcc is too old but that it is
too new. Try it with gcc 3.3.
