Cool! All though we don't really need -rt anymore afaik. Lowlatency
would be good enough.
I build, but never tested a full preempt kernel with threadirqs set.
Anyway, this already was claimed for preempt enabled kernels before
2.6.29 and at least at this time it wasn't true. Depending to your
workflow and your cognitive ability, you might wish to get less audio
latency with hard real-time MIDI jitter.
People often blame MIDI of not being capable to do some things. I
recommend to get rid of ms of jitter and to use several PCI MIDI
interfaces, before claiming that MIDI shouldn't be able to do something.
IMO a rt patched kernel is a step into the right direction to get hard
real-time.

I very much welcome the endeavour! But i did not yet have the time to
take a closer look.
I currently use it for a project. With a default debian install - no
tweaks -, 36 channel low latency audio is running perfectly OOTB! Kudos
to the debian team!
x64_64; i7 @ 2.10GHz; Sandy Bridge graphics.
There's X on the machine but I don't use it, I also have not looked at
MIDI or anything besides running JACK over ssh.

community is the one developing the drivers. I certainly can't blame the
vendor for them, since they had nothing to do with developing them.

Don't use a borked distro! If your distro don't provide the nv driver,
but replace it with an experimental driver, that knowingly isn't
working
for half of the NVIDIA graphics on the market, such as the nouveau
driver, than your distro is borked!

Serious, nouveau is marked as experimental, hence it isn't the time to
drop the FLOSS nv driver.

I dropped my Debian install, but I guess my Ubuntu Studio Oneiric and
the planned openDAW (IOW a new Debian) install might offend the GPL
during this weekend. The cause is nouveau "so I won't remove the

Will this run BEFORE nvidia is expected (well before any attempt to start
xorg!) ?
May need more here: Nouveau, in any event, is blacklisted in the modules.d
because of the above requirement--the driver or some pre-load of it gets
modprobed early in the bootup sequence. I have not seen or heard from nv in
ages--maybe it does not have this blacklisting idea.
So in toggling Nouveau, I need to copy or remove the blacklist file as well--a
one-liner in each ). It would be nice to be able to have one xorg.conf take
care of this but the above script is not at all bad. Thanks for the idea.
BTW. I like Nouveau, had no problems with it. Inserts a small but readable
console font (instead of nvidia's awful messup) and the desktop looks nice
(allbeit maybe everything a bit smaller than using nvidia). What I miss with
Nouveau is hw acceleration. For many lau apps, this could be a showstopper.
For other retro-fans, one other 3.2-rt problem I encountered was the failure
of snd-mpu401 to modprobe with "no such device." I use it to drive an old
Yamaha sw60xg sound generator ISA card. Oldie but goodie---don't ask how I
manage to still have ISA!
