Hi,
I just move out to singapore (Is there some people staying in singapore
in this mailing list?), and i only have a laptop now. Before, i had a SB
Live card, and i would have a new card, for my Laptop (better than my
old one, or at least alike). I need about 1-2 sound input, 1-3 sound
output, and 1-2 midi I/O USB sound card. Or maybe PCMCIA. But i would it
working with ... linux. And i cannot find any good sources who tell me
which external sound card work pretty well. I'm mainly using jackd and
pd.
Someone could maybe report a good experience with this kind of hardware,
and advice my a specific external sound card.

Be careful with external sound cards! A friend of mine buyed the
creative labs sound blaster extigy

for his laptop and he has got serious latency problems ( >200ms) on
windows using Cubase. This external "card" uses USB which seems to be a
bit too slow for this kind of application.
Maybe there is firewire Hardware out there ? ?

I heard some other bad latency
experience with usb hardware. But mybe
that there are some better card that sb extigy. I just look for people
who could advise me ;)

yes. i use the rme multiface carbus with my laptop and it works
great! recent alsa updates (v 1.0.5..?) have done great things for
this combo. before i was using it with its pci card in a desktop
version. the rme multiface + cardbus was ~ $850 when i bought it a
couple years ago. might be cheaper now.
running planet-ccrma, by the way, in both of these. still testing
gentoo ppc on my apple laptop.

This is not so generally. I get quite okay latencies with my cheap USB
card (jack -p 128 or -p 256 works fine)

RME is very expensive. For supported USB cards look at
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ Generally spoken: stay clear of
M-Audio USB ware like the Quattro, try to use a slighty older device,
so it has already been tested by some people.
I use a USB card with Pd on my laptop and I'm quite happy with it.

Which one is it exactly? What latency do you have with your MIDI input
and output? because i would not have some bad experience, so if you tell
me, yours is working fine, i will look for the same. I heard so much bad
story about USB sound card with linux...

I never use it but I hear some good things about it for Linux.

That's because they are manufactured somewhere in Asia, get send to
Terratec in Germany and then move all the way back to Singapore. Ah,
the wonders of global capitalism... ;)
