Hey everyone - happy holidays to you all!
With all of this radio talk going around, I wanted to ask a question
that has been on my mind lately: Is it possible to listen to
over-the-air radio (you know, the old kind) on your pc? If so, how
does that work? I'm assuming there would be some hardware that would
provide an antenna hook-up, but that's all I can think of.
I'm a big AM radio junkie...I used to love trying to pick up far-away
stations as a kid, so it would be a fun thing to put together.

Hello Josh!
this is not a solution. But I can understand your love for that. I did it
myself. But nowadays you sorarely see a radio, that even offers to tune into
AM. I just stick to computer only. Especially the big stations, that you can
get over AM, can be relied upon having a stream online. Still I think, there
are radio cards. Not sure, if they only support digital input, or if they can
be connected to a house antenna.

Hi Josh;
I have an old Hauppauge TV card that has a radio tuner on it and came
with a dipole antenna. It worked out of the box with Linux.

actually linux makes a great radio. especially when the radio uses ALSA and Jack, of
course...
GordonJCP had the bright idea to do this with SDR, essentially a stereo audio input is the
'raw spectrum' and output is demodulated audio, as a Jack App

however it did not have AM, or frequency-agility, so i added it:

now this is my main radio..
personally i use a Soft66, from http://zao.jp/radio . the softrock kits are also
affordable ,and can be had for ~50 USD
soft66 specs claim 2.5 MHz to 75 MHz, but they do work to around 0.5 MHz fine, as you can
see in the screenshot
also check out Quisk/Linrad if using JAck for you radio is too radical
