hi all,
(posted the same message on the alsa-user list, but without reply, now trying
here)
i have a machine with two pci devices of the same type. how can i ensure
persistent device indices?
the wiki [1] mentions a way for a way using vid/pid, but for pci devices it
suggests to write a udev rule. [2] has an example, but it only describes how to
set up the device names in /dev/snd. but how do i bind a specific device to an
alsa device index (hw:X)?

Doesn't specifying the pid (product id) work ?
I'm not sure myself, which is the pid for PCI devices.
Any of the numbers listed by lspci ? :
sudo update-pciids
lspci -nn

Is it ?
for example
modinfo snd_ice1712
or
modinfo -p snd_ice1712
tells me, that the parameter id is supported:
parm: id:ID string for ICE1712 soundcard. (array of charp)
The options line would then look as
options snd-ice1712 index=1,2 id=0x0033,0x0044

Apparently not.
I've run into this with my studio machine which has 2 Delta 1010s
in it. It at least consistently indexes the cards correctly across
reboots so I know which one is 0 and which is 1, but but if I make
any changes to the PCI bus, this can change (and has).
Running Fedora 12/Planet CCRMA kernel 2.6.31.12-1.rt20.1.fc12.ccrma.i686.rtPAE

In theory, there should be some configuration tool to create the
configuration file.
Anyway, for identical devices, you have to haul out the big guns:

linked to from jackaudio.org. is it really this impossible to expect a wiki
