Hi all :)
thank you for the qualified advices.
I need to take a walk now and then a shower to calm down (I'm still
pissed off), but until now switching to Debian is worth the effort. The
GNOME2 performance of Debian stable is much better than of Ubuntu.
Pulse Audio is not installed by default :).
I only needed to correct /etc/default/rcS, regarding to a wrong UTC
setting, that perhaps was wrong, because of my fault.
I had to add repositories and copied some from a forum, I thin it out
and command most out.
What repositories should I use to set up a stable DAW? Btw. my list is
attached and I will compare it with your suggestions I already received
later.
Is there a repository including JACK2 from svn?
Until now it's an upgraded, minimal system, just a stable install,
excepted of Evolution and dependencies, those are from testing.
At 16:40 my RME HDSPe AIO, KORG NANOKONTROL, an ADAT device and some
other stuff was delivered :), now, more than two hours later, neither
the new gear is unpacked, nor Debian stable is set up as an audio/MIDI
workstation.
But the only really annoying thing is, that I had to reboot Ubuntu
Natty, because I wasn't able to adopt the Evolution files for Debian's
Evolution.
OT for LAU, but perhaps somebody knows what to do:
After copying

-pr /media/natty/home/spinymouse/.gnome2/accels/evolution /home/spinymouse/.gnome2/accels
Evolution started with a manager to set up Evolution AND TO IMPORT
FILES, so I deleted what I copied before.
Unfortunately there was no option to import files, Evolution tried to
force me to set up a new account. This is completely idiotic, because it
should be possible to simply copy the files for equal versions of
Evolution, from one to another install.
Does anybody know how to import account settings and emails, resp. what
files I need to copy?

PS: To be fair. In several years using Linux audio/MIDI, Ubuntu Maverick
is the first completely working audio/MIDI workstation that fit to my
uncompromising needs, regarding to the usage of hardware MIDI. But it's
a no go that I'm unable to use the mouse wheel, that the DE performance
is less good etc..
For Debian I still need to set up a xorg.conf, hopefully it will keep in
good shape ;). I suspect many issues regarding to the way X is handled
today.

To use jack2 you should be using sid or perhaps testing, not stable.
Debian installs with only the 'main' archives enabled. First thing to do is add
'non-free' and 'contrib' archives to your sources.list. You will note
that
there is quite a few documentation packages in non-free, as well as the various
distributable but not open-source firmware blobs for important bits of hardware.
The inclusion of jack2 was done in such a way that you can switch between them,
without changing anything else. It was decided that they are alternative
versions which will each remain available, along with any other implementation
with a compatible API. Packages may also depend on one or the other if this is
really required. This was tricky and wasn't fully ready before the freeze for
squeeze several months ago. A mixed stable/testing system will be asking for
trouble here.
So - if you want to use the current DAW packages that are part of debian,
especially if you want to run jack2, you need to be using sid and not using
stable. Then they are part of debian main, no other repositories required.
Definitely DO NOT use http://www.debian-multimedia.org, the changes it makes to
the various libraries and mplayer etc will give you mp3 encoding and a bunch of
codecs that are not in debian, but the cost is it will often break the DAW
packages that are not maintained in this repository ... they rely on those
libraries in the debian form.
For using those codecs install an alternative distribution like Mint and chroot
or reboot when you need them.
Until now it's an upgraded, minimal system, just a stable install,
excepted of Evolution and dependencies, those are from testing.
See above, to use jack2, and the huge amount of work done in the last 9 months
by debian multimedia maintainers you can't be using stable, and a mixed system
will get you into trouble sooner rather than later. This work is continuing very
quickly, but will not be in stable until wheezy becomes the new stable in 2013.
In debian terms "stable" means unchanging, frozen, fully predictable, security
related fixes only ... for a three year lifespan while "unstable" means
changing, volatile, updated with new work, versions and such like and "testing"
means the candidate for the next stable.
I can't help with evolution.

I don't think so, it's a declarative statement.
I guess nobody wish to have a vertically frequency of 60Hz ;), it's not
very pleasant to look into a stroboscope. In addition I wish to be able
to select the screen resolution I like, 1152x864 @ 90Hz.
Then I have several needs and need several drivers. I'm used to switch
the drivers automatically at startup, by adding

At the moment I urgently need help regarding to xorg.conf or any other
solution that enables me to select the driver, and to get 1152x864 @
90Hz.
The graphics is a NVIDIA GeForce 7200 GS aka 7300 SE. The CRT monitor is
an Lifetec/Medion MD1998JB J91B.
I never had issues with old Debian/Ubuntu and Suse installs. I ordered
some new gear, a RME HDSPe AIO sound card + a 8 analog IO ADAT device
and some other stuff. It was delivered yesterday, but it's still
packaged, because I'm unable to set up a new Linux DAW. Old Linux DAWs
are still available by backup archives ;).
At the moment for my Debian install, the mouse wheel isn't working, as
soon as I add a xorg.conf. Without an xorg.conf the mouse wheel seems to
work all the times. I stopped trying to use old xorg.confs.
I run Xorg -configure in recovery mode.
The mouse is a wired Trekker Wheel Mouse 2.0A PS/2.
This is what Xorg -configure generated

for SysEx dump only and disconnected when making music.
When using Jack2 from svn I run
sudo chgrp audio /dev/hpet
sudo chmod g+rw /dev/hpet
sudo modprobe snd-hrtimer
andenable his timer for Qtractor, resp. ALSA seq.
I run
jackd --sync -Xalsarawmidi -dalsa -r48000 -p256
a2jmidi_bridge
The hpet thingy still is a little bit trick on my machine, if I run jack
with hpet, there aren't enough devices available.
This -Xalsarawmidi cause 0ms jitter.
Hopefully a lot of things will become better now. The new RME card is
using PCI express, I dunno it this would be better for hw MIDI out.
After mounting my new card I can try Jack1 too!

If you compile it yourself then ensuring it fits with the other packages is a
bit trickier ... it is the interaction between libraries and between packages
that a distribution solves for you. If you prefer to compile most of the
multimedia stuff yourself, then staying with debian stable as your base could be
good. You may find yourself compiling a number of the libraries because they
won't be the right version in stable.
/opt and /usr/local are the place to put locally compiled things, /usr/local
if you are using the libraries provided by the distribution, /opt if you are
also compiling the libraries so you can keep them separate. Ardour is taking
this path with its ardour3 alpha releases, putting everything in a folder so
that it does not rely on the distribution libraries at all. The packages are
large, and compiling this is not easy.
But ... if your plan is to compile yourself, consider gentoo instead - it is a
distribution put together with compiling your own stuff in mind, and much more
flexible and suited to this approach, with ways to manage the process and create
your own templates etc. I believe that there is an active audio community there
which would be quite helpful.

I think that mixing debian.org and debian-multimedia.org is a mistake for your
purposes, because the debian-multimedia.org libraries will replace the
debian.org ones, and this often causes problems for the other audio packages
that are not on debian-multimedia.org, and you will be using plenty of them.

Not if you apt-pin them and only take what you need. I never had a
problem with that in the last years from woody to wheezy.

certainly if you are careful and only take what you want from
debian-multimedia.org, and keep track of what is breaking things, then you can
make it work.
I personally prefer to have a separate system for those codecs and such, and use
them as little as possible.
There is another reason to use two boots - Ralf mentioned using wine, and having
a 64bit system. Wine is much easier on 32bit systems, and it would be a good
idea to have a 32bit system (set up to be used via chroot perhaps) for wine
so it may as well be something like Mint which includes the stuff that debian
won't include.

No! No chroot! FWIW in the past I build wineasio on 64-bit 64 Studio
without issues and e.g. Reaper did run, but wineasio does cause much to
much jitter. I don't need any Windows software, excepted the software to
set up the KORG NANOCONTROL.

Yes. Works. Like most MIDI mapping editors (Akai MPK editor, Mountain
Utilities BC Manager, Korg KONTROL Editor) . But you might not need it

I don't know about NANOCONTROL but each of the occasional times I have wanted to
use wine the required dlls were only available 32bit, so I rebooted in a 32bit
system to use it. (no, I didn't chroot, just a reboot for those rare tasks)

There's some truth to that. but Ralf mentioned earlier that he want to
use jack2 from SVN anyway.

I beg to disagree: I'm running a mixed system
(stable/testing/experimental) without re-installing (just copy it over
to new hardware - i386 architecture) since debian/woody. Apt-pinning
helps a lot and `aptitude` does a great job at resolving dependencies.
I've posted some /etc/apt/ files earlier in this thread.

I prefer using Synaptic, to get a history. If something unexpected
should get broken, the history might help.
I make backup_archives.tar.gz and I don't sync the files. I always
backup the complete Linux and keep at least the last 2 backup archives.
It might be that I didn't notice that something got broken, so a synced
backups also could be broken.

These days it is very unusual to edit xorg.conf manually. HAL does most
of the input-device setup.
Unless you've already disable HAL in xorg.conf - see

I now try to set up xorg.conf for the monitor and for a while I'll
ignore hat the wheel doesn't work.
These days it is very unusual to edit xorg.conf manually. HAL does most
of the input-device setup.
Unless you've already disable HAL in xorg.conf - see

instead of xorg.

So - if you
want to use the current DAW packages that are part of
debian, especially if you want to run jack2, you need to be using sid
and not using stable.
Where did you get this idea? Ardour2.8.11 w/jack2 works OOTB on
debian/squeeze. debian-multimedia.org works just fine as additional
repo. for squeeze,
wheezy and sid.
Could you please provide an example where it /breaks/ things or produces
conflicts?
Look at the debian multimedia maintainers list to see how often things break. It
is quite often.
I beg to disagree: I'm running a mixed system
(stable/testing/experimental) without re-installing (just copy it over
to new hardware - i386 architecture) since debian/woody. Apt-pinning
helps a lot and `aptitude` does a great job at resolving dependencies.
I've posted some /etc/apt/ files earlier in this thread.
sure, there are many ways to manage a system. Threads like this were a great
resource when I set up my system.
This
work is continuing very quickly, but will not be in stable until wheezy
becomes the new stable in 2013. In debian terms "stable" means
unchanging, frozen, fully predictable, security related fixes only ...
perfect.>2 years of making music without worrying about the system :)
