OK, I've never done wireless with Linux before, and (surprise) it's
apparently a baffling ordeal, as lots of common devices aren't
supported!
All I need to know is "does the Linksys WUSB 54G work OOTB". IOW
configure the kernel source, make, make install and no f*ing with out of
tree drivers.

Not sure about "lots of common devices are not supported"...I thought
the most common wireless chips were Orinco and Prism & Prism (2).
Depending on the distro u use, wireless is fairly easy to get going. The
Dlink PCMCIA card for some reason I could not get working and it has a
prism chip but the others actually fire right up on PCLOS (MDK based
distro) and did so in Mandrake as well. Demudi even configured my Prism
based card on its own.

I think it's Prism 54 based (although not in this list).

Basically it seems that even the ones with no Linux driver work with
ndiswrapper. And the above doc tells you which require ndiswrapper and
which have a native driver.
Is it true that all Motorola PCMCIA cards use Broadcom chipsets so
require ndiswrapper?

i can't answer that question. but i can tell you that i paid for the
commercial driver support framework for NDIS (i forget the name) a year
or so back. i now use ndiswrapper, and FC1+FC3 was perfectly able to
configure and use my broadcom-based wireless setup with no modifications
on my part whatsoever.

Hi,
I have a D-Link-G650+ PCMCIA card. This card has two revisions, only the
later revisions have the texas instruments chipset which is supposed to
work with the acx100 driver from:

I could never get this to work, so I use ndiswrapper. Bear in mind that
my computer, even though it has two PCMCIA slots causes the wireless
card to stop functioning if I put my Echo Mona card in another slot (no
matter which). This behaviour occurs in windows as well.
Another bad thing is that the driver does something every minute, so I
get an xrun every 60 seconds exactly, when the card is connected (at any
latency).

Lot of this devices are "windows designed" :(

Well USB wifi hardware sucks, they need firmware and so on.
I managed few month ago to make a MA111 (prism 2) working with
linux-wlan-ng on Knoppix but it was unstable and wlanng seems not to
support new 2.6 kernel very well.
I've a pci rtl8180 (realtek) which is unusable: neither ndiswrapper
neither proprietary driver for linux works at home.
