I'm looking for some kind of midi processor that would allow me to convert
midi input (from a controller) into some other midi output (to gear) so that
I can workaround the limitiation of my faderfoxes that have all midi
pre-wired. Would there be an application like that is lightwheight enough I
could run it on my EEE ?

Hi Marc
you can use pd to transform midi data in any way you like, you don't
have to switch on the audio processing so it can behave lightweight. I
use it all the time for that purpose.
I am curious to hear what you are doing with the EEE.

I'm kind of scared to dive into the complexity of PD but I guess I should
give it a try...
As for thr EEE, I'm still in hope to get it properly running for minimal
audio but I seem to hit the wall glitchwise. I'm sure it's somehow possible
(littlegptracker eats only about 10% of the CPU) but all config I've tried
never lead me to smooth playback. Probably setting up a proper linuxRT on it
should make it ok but all my attempts lead to failure. I enjoy it a lot as a
portable development machine (I do a lot of coding in the bus) but so far
the audio part has only given me disapointment. According to some,
re-compiling a RT xandros kernel works but even a major geek like me tends
to be turned of by the lack of clean solutions for that. I want to spend
time coding or doing music, not configuring kernels grabbing pieces of
information all over the place.
It's such a neat inexpensive machine tho, it's a shame not to be able to use
it for music on the go/ gigs and stuff. Probably one day I'll be able to fix
it.

A bit of Pd knowledge can't hurt, and aquiring it doesn't have to
hurt either. Attached is a basic example which just transforms
incoming cc-messages into cc-messages on a configurable, different

although the basic patch consists of just a couple of builtin objects.
Try a right-click -> Help on each object to learn a bit more about
each, then go through the examples in "Help -> Browser ->
2.control.examples" and also read the HTML manual. After that you
should be on your way to Pd guruness.

Regarding the glitchy sound on the eeePC, I think it may be because of
interrupt sharing between sound and video (although other people on
this list didn't agree). In the end I bought myself a _very_ cheap USB
soundcard (asonic something or other - used to be £10 on ebuyer, but
not sold there any more), and jack now runs completely glitch-free.

I've been asking for such a utility for a while. As
I've mentioned
before , something like a software version of the Yamaha MEP4 would be
neat. If I ever have the time I'll try to hack Holborn's midirgui to do
it. Like I'll ever have the time... :(

I've been asking for such a utility for a while. As I've mentioned
before , something like a software version of the Yamaha MEP4 would be

i would probably build a PD (puredata) patch to do it. i´ve heard pd
runs smooth on eee. the problem is that you need to learn a bit of pd
patching - what is not so easy if you did not work with this type of
software

Wouldn't midirgui or qmidiroute do that?
