Hi,
Try to use F3/F4 keys to view switch (Playback/Capture) - look in
upper left corner in alsamixer, to see actual mode.

Actually your message made me realize that I had a term problem. When I
press F3 or F4 in xterm, alsamixer just exits. If I use these keys in
rxvt though, it works as intended.
Now I'm ok with the use of alsamixer, but still have a problem.
