Hi all,
I have some play-a-long tracks from Jamey Aebersold that I would like to
use for practice.
They are setup so that bass and drums are on the L channel, and piano and
drums are on the R. Since I play piano, I need only the L channel. Is
there any way to "extract" only the L channel out of the recordings? Once
that is done, can something be done to the result that would cause it to
sound in both R and L channels, like a true mono recording perhaps? I can
easily turn the pan control on my mixer fully left, but that leaves a big
hole in the right side.

I think you can use Audacity, there is a function there for splitting
stereo to mono, then you just delete the R channel and export it as
mono wav/mp3/whatever or just play it directly from audacity :)

I think you can use Audacity, there is a function there

One of the best tools for play-along practice I have found is
Transcribe. It's super for transcribing but for play-along;
1) change the key of the piece (within boundaries) -- need to practice a
song in A
but the singer want's it in C? no problem.
2) Change pitch -- I play along with Beatles tracks a lot and they are not
always in
standard tuning, but somewhere in between.
3) Loop part of the recording to practice a particularly difficult
portion... no problem.
4) Want only left or right side? or wanna subtract them? no problem...
5) Need some tech support? Fire off a email and get answers from the
creator of the
program!
6) Need to exchange transcribe files with annotations with other users on a
different platform
like Mac or Windows? No problem.
And lots of other goodies... For a mere 35 euro's? Bargain!!

You can probably do most (or all) of this with Ardour and a few LADSPA
plugins (like the rubberband ones) too, although perhaps it's not the
most obvious way to do it. But you do get the bonus of being able to
record yourself and listen back to evaluate yourself.

You can do it with a c compiler,and motherboard with a DAC some
of us like to play music. And transcribe does record, but I would
not suggest is as an alternative for Ardour.

It's stretched audio sounds much better than anything else under linux,
and selecting a portion to loop is soo easy.
I'd love to use a free tool, but there just aren't any that comes close,
sorry.

And not because it's my software ... but MMA is a great tool for
practice. Believe me, I use it daily and I'm actually a bit better now
than I was 10 years ago :)
