Hi, List
I'm new to Linux Audio so apologies if this is a FAQ. I've just worked out
how to use my PC as an effects processor (I "play" guitar - but I am getting
better). I'm using a Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 soundcard and manage to get
pretty good latency (5ms) with a stock SuSE 9.1 kernel (even running KDE!).
I use qjackctl to control the jack server, and ecamegapedal (sometimes creox)
to supply the effects, and I've just managed to work out how to use ecasound
from the CLI to record input and output streams (to show a Winders using
friend what Linux can do).
There's just a couple of nagging questions that I've not managed to work out
on my own.
1. Is there anyway to store and recover the jack connections so I don't have
to disconnect the defaults and repatch every time I start jack.
2. Is there any way to save the effect settings after I've tweaked them to
perfection in ecamegapedal, so they can be recalled (maybe I'm not using the
best application).

qjackctl can do that with its patchbay functionality.. A little more
limited in its capabilities but also a bit easier to use is my
jack_snapshot utility which is a CLI app which you find here:

Dunno. You might also give jack-rack a spin. It can save LADSPA effect setups.

I've not used it. Surely you can save the patches somehow?
Dunno. You might also give jack-rack a spin. It can
save LADSPA effect
setups.
It's also worth considering using either ecasound or Ardour as an effects
host. This might sound like a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but is
surprisingly effective. As you are already using ecasound, it might not be
too great a step to figure out a suitable command line, which can be saved as
a shell script. If you prefer a gui, Ardour actually does well and uses less
resources than Jack-Rack. Jack-rack is more user-friendly if you have the
juice to support it.

Actually I've tried to run the version of ardour that came with SuSE and
couldn't get it to cooperate at all. Just noticed that SuSE 9.2 comes with
jack-rack, but am sticking to my decision to wait until 9.3/10 to upgrade
(for the moment).

Yeah, I've read a bit about jack-rack (saw it first in last month's Linux
Format tutorial). I'm steadily working through the dependencies needed to
compile it. Just beginning to realise why SuSE is updated twice a year!
I'm only on JACK 0.94.0. and (after upgrading liblrdf) I found I needed 0.99
to compile jack-rack. I'm worried about upgrading from source because of all
the other programs that depend upon JACK, but it's difficult to find an RPM
for x86_64.
