Somebody made me attend on this list, specializing in sound problems.
I write music semi-professionally and therefore have to use Finale,
which is Windows only. I have installed Vmware where Windows XP is
running as a guest and there I run Finale.
The sound produced by any sound application in Windows is "stuttering"
and distorted and quite unusable.
System: AMD Phenom II (4-core, 2.4 GHz)) 4GB mem; Ubuntu Karmic.
Sound is OK in Karmic (flash video's no problem, CD's no problem).
Vmware : soundcard : autodetect. I have tried other possibilities but
none worked better.
I suspect pulse-audio, which I think is not a good development as I
prefer good old ALSA without "embellishments". However, audacity, which
I use regularly in Linux works without a problem.
Can anybody give me some help to solve this problem as it is rather
urgent and I don't want a system with Windows only.
I hope somebody can help me out.

What kind of audio device are you using? You can always turn off
pulseaudio... I wouldn't expect audio performance to be stellar inside
a VM, especially if you are using any kinds of samples for playback.
Is it possible to have Finale send MIDI to Linux and have Linux do the
audio playback using something like Fluidsynth?
Alternatively, if you want an all Linux solution, use Lilypond for
your music notation! I moved away from GUI notation apps to Lilypond
and have never looked back.

Thanks for the fast answer. I arrange (and write) the last 6 years with
Finale and am rather accomplished with it. I have tried (and still try)
Musescore, but that is still lacking features I need (but it is coming).
I am an arranger who want to hear what is written every say 4 bars or
more as I arrange as well for Big Band as for 2 piano's. I have looked
at Lilypond I think 8 years ago but I found it then too cumbersome and a
very steep learning curve.
The audio device I use is the built-in audio by NVIDIA (Device manager
says it is a HDA Nvidia sound card) Although I'm a semi-professional
jazz pianist (I'm retired) I don't care much for the audio from my
computer. If I want to listen I use my sound-system. Since I recently
can record with the Zoom R16 I burn it on rewritable CD's and if I want
to record permanently I write on DVD (as that is 24-bit).
You says that pulseaudio can be turned off? How? I thought it so deep -
at least in Ubuntu - in the system that than all sound stops.
O by the way, I have tried virtualbox instead of vmware but als the
sound was lousy and moreover it played the the finale files 4 times
slower than was original.
In vmware I have Finale running via MIDI but that doesn't make any
difference.
Maybe you or somebody else has some suggestions?

Thanks for the answer.
I tried first with wine but that wouldn't run at all. Under virtualbox
(with Windows XP as guest) the sound was completely unusable and under
vmware it is the best with but not really usable. The problem is that
the same output sample (signal?) are repeated 3 or 4 times with
diminishing intensity and distorted. I changed in vmware the output
device to ALSA and disconnected the pulse-audio server, using the
PulseAudio Manager. I have sound from vmware but still stuttering.
In linux, with pulse-audio disconnected the youtube sounds are OK (I
test with Keith Jarret "Over the Rainbow"). The same file on the guest
XP gives no sound and is very slow (which in my opinion is ludicrous on
a fast 3-core system), but maybe I have to restart my system.
Fritz, I don't know what you mean with "the activation process..." of
Vmware or of Finale?
I'm using Finale 2008 with the correct activation key. On the VMware
list somebody said that the audio implementation of Vmware was OSS and
that it did not comply with the OSS under Linux. However, most guys
there are Windows users so I don't know what the value is of that
remark, moreover Vmware gives you emulation choices.
I hope I can find a solution, preferably with the help of this group and
when I have the solution I will report back.

I use VirtualBox a little and have no audio problems using Pulse.
Matter of fact, I often have Linux playing music and have to stop it
when the virtual stuff starts with a video, etc. Only suggestion I
have it to change the virtual sound card. I use
ICH AC97
which is recommended somewhere.

Have you tried running finale under Wine?
A quick Google search shows it should run fine, and would probably
have less processor overhead than trying to run a VM.

To the best of my knowledge, various people have tried running Finale
under Wine and have found that older versions only sort-of ran. Most
report problems with sound and/or midi in-out. Since both of these are
essential for productive use of Finale, the short answer is that
Finale does not run under Wine in a way that will let a professional
work productively with it. More recent versions of Finale appear to be
less likely to work; the activation process also appears to be a
problem.
