Its not "out-of-the-box with XP and OS

you have to install a vendor supplied driver, or am i missing
something?
The vendor causes it to be out-of-the-box by providing whatever
software is needed *in the box*. What the buyer has in hand to work
with is a combination of hardware, software, and instructions that
results in useful capabilities on two of the three systems under
discussion.
you're missing the point. what is meant when people refer to "works out
of the box" means: THERE IS NO SOFTWARE TO INSTALL.
the vast majority of USB devices work this way, although in all fairness
they often have a little control app that can be useful (but is not
required).
if the device works without a software install (many packages now say
"no drivers required"), then the chances are excellent (i.e. almost
guaranteed) that it will work on linux.
