Hi,
Anyone in here using a RME cardbus card in a laptop ?
I'm considering going that route and it would be nice to
be able to use that interface in Linux.
I was planning to go the powerbook way, but as I have to
develop for XP and Linux in the first place, I will probably
go for a Thinkpad (who seem to have great battery life).
Any info is appreciated,

PS: I noticed that the Multiface is listed as supported on the
ALSA site, but I don't know if that means the cardbus card too,
or only the PCI card + multiface.

I am currently using HDSP + cardbus with ALSA, Jack, PD, Ardour, etc....
under Gentoo.

Latest version available: 0.9_beta8
I should probably try the CVS, but it's a bit of work the first time
round... ;-)
The only stuff I hand-compile from CVS are Pure Data and related
externals. But this is my "core-app", so I don't mind.

I use the HDSP Cardbus/Multiface combination with a ThinkPad A31
with good success. Because the the A31 (base) does not have firewire
(or USB2), I also use a cardbus firewire interface with an external
drive.
The primary maintainers of the HDSP alsa driver are Paul Davis and
Thomas Charbonnel, who are both active in the community, and have
fixed issues with new firmware etc....
Make sure you get Thomas's wonderful tools hdspmixer and hdspconf...
i believe they are included with alsa tools now.

I'm curious as the T40p doesn't have firewire either.

Yes, IBM is a bit strange with their (lack of)
inclusion of FW
on most machines.
They have it on their r-series.
But if they have two cardbus slots, you can as well put a cardbus
fw interface as you do. What kind of cardbus firewire interface
do you use by the way ? Easy to setup in Linux :) ?

Actually ;-) My milage varied. I had a lot of issues to begin with. I
tried moving IRQs around. Did not seem to be of any benifit. In my case
it actually made things more unstable.
I have many hours of recording time on my setup. Using both Maudio
converters, and the Tascam DM24 for i/o. And have not had any real
issues when recording. Other than the screen going to sleep :-( Thus
leaving me with a jumbled screen. But Ardour keeps on going and going
and going and going..............

Can you quantify your exact configuration for me? I believe we
have nearly identical hardware. I may not have hit instabilities
because i haven't stressed it enough.

CardBus cards do not necessarily get handled by pcmcia drivers, they are
really more like PCI cards. Just make sure your kernel has CardBus
support enabled in the kernel. From the kernel setup:
[General setup]->[PCMCIA/cardbus support]-> say yes at the top, and yes for
CardBus support.
Currently with the card inserted what is the output from
'lspci -v' ?
If you can more fully express the symptoms of your problem, then we can

the hdsp is recognized by the system, the modules load (more or less)
fine, i can upload the firmware ... but when i try to play a sound the
sound sounds distorted ... a sound-file played with aplay seems to have
the right pitch, but takes longer than it should ... it seems that there
are gaps of a few ms where nothing is played ...
the mixer works fine, i can route an input signal to the outputs, but if
a sound application is started (jack,aplay...) the sound starts to get
this distortion i described earlier ... when i change the sample rate
(hdspconf) the pitch of the distortion changes...

i checked several configurations in the last 10 days ... several alsa
versions, i even installed kernel 2.6.1-rc3 ... no success
and i installed winxp, which worked fine ... so the device works ...
since both paul davies and thomas charbonnel have not really an idea,
what's the problem i doubt that it's a problem on the alsa side ... my
16bit wlan card works fine on this machine, but it's the only 32bit
cardbus card i ever tried on this machine ...
i'm nearly at a point where i consider selling my (not that old)
notebook (acer aspire 1400) and buying a new one ...
so it would be pretty cool, if you figure out what's the problem with my
system...

Question to OTHER users- has anyone else had success using the O2 Micro
Cardbus Controller?
Comment to Tim - Tim, the slot you have chosen for the HDSP is using IRQ
5. (the second O2 controller) Can you switch to the other slot and take
advantage of IRQ11 instead?
Please note that ANY cardbus device is going through a PCI-PCI bridge.
This basically buffers all transactions between the Cardbus card and the
internals of the PC. Note the primary and secondary bus numbers on both
controllers (primary == 2, secondary == 3 or 7)

Currently with
the card inserted what is the output from
'lspci -v' ?
If you can more fully express the symptoms of your problem, then we
can help solve it. If you have done so before, I don't think I saw
it....
the hdsp is recognized by the system, the modules load (more or less)
fine, i can upload the firmware ... but when i try to play a sound the
sound sounds distorted ... a sound-file played with aplay seems to have
the right pitch, but takes longer than it should ... it seems that there
are gaps of a few ms where nothing is played ... the mixer works fine, i can route an input signal to
the outputs, but if
a sound application is started (jack,aplay...) the sound starts to get
this distortion i described earlier ... when i change the sample rate
(hdspconf) the pitch of the distortion changes...
I think this is might be important. BTW - what's in your .soundrc file?

This is a snippet from lspci output from 803Lci I found on the net
(different sites have very similar outputs).
It looks that O2 Micro controllers in general add quite some latency and
should be avoided for professional audio as RME and Derek have pointed
out.
But are all O2 Micro controllers equally "bad"? Do we have any coment
from your frined or any other user of Acer?
The device found in 803Lci should be O2 MICRO Inc. OZ711M1 according to

Humm....I have not seen those comments. If RME has designed the Cardbus
solution then I think it must work well with some cardbus controllers,
correct? I am looking on the RME sire now but do not see any specific
statements about O2 Micro cardbus controllers being bad. It's not udner
their 'Hardware Alert' page. Where are you finding this? Please post a
link.

they are making a good product. I have not searched the web for contrary

Not much - these are PCI type latencies and not audio buffer latencies.
The issue with cardbus controllers, or PCI bridges in general, is that
you are buffering from one PCI bus - the main PC PCI bus - to a second
bus on the other side of the controller. If the memory built into the
Cardbus controller is large enough then generally the whole audio packet
will make it across in one chunk. However, will smaller on-chip buffer
memories it can get broken into pieces and have to be reassembled in the
sound chip. This runs the risk that all the audio data will not be there
when it's needed.
Good to know that my friend's chips are not the ones causing problems,
unless Tim's problems are due to this chip which we do not know yet.

the RME pages and noone is saying O2 Micro is a bad cardbus controller.

When the "FT" hits you it will be an interesting reading.
Just a very naïve question: Would an audio loopback cable do for testing
the audio latency? Asummming the playback and recording latencies are
similar it should give an estimate value.

I am very sorry for misinterpreting the RME's laptop comparison table
(http://www.rme-audio.com/images/techinfo/hdsp/testtabe.pdf). I was
guessing higher minimal latency was a bad thing. And on one of the linux
on laptop pages I found a statement about O2 Micro not being the good
choice. But it might be related to the fact they don't want to release
specs for the SmartCard reader. Other than that I don't have any
arguments against O2 Micro.

if i use the second pcmcia slot, i can manage to
run the hdsp on irq11
... anyway, there are quite a few devices on this irq, too (pcmcia,
on-board sound, usb, eth0) ... on irq5 there are only the pcmcia and the
usb controller ... i suppose it's not possible to get the hdsp to use
another irq than the corresponding pcmcia controller ... if i'm wrong,
please correct me...

getting a higher priority irq is much much more important than getting
a non-shared irq for your soundcard. irq5 is very low priority and will
almost be 'served' as last...
also, maybe you can disable onboard sound and USB in the bios if you
test with your RME card? and if you don't need network connection
during testing... you can try to shut down eth0... (cant remember the
correct commandline for that; there is some gui-too as well, network
control iirc)

A few things:
1) I never got a soundcard running proper on IRQ 5. That could be one
part of the trouble. Currently my IRQ 9 looks like this:

2) Often there is a difference between the two PCMCIA slots in a laptop.
One them is a type-1 and one of them is a type-2. I never got results
putting my cardbus in the #1, type-1 slot [which incidentally defaults
to IRQ 5, hmmmmmm]. Also of note is that a type-2 slot monopolizes the
system, and I cannot run a type-1 card in the other slot [Flash memory,
wlan, or whatever...] without a kernel freeze when using the HDSP. Be
curious to know from some guru here why that is...
3) If your BIOS cannot reassign IRQs, you should try booting with
"pci=noacpi" or even "acpi=off" in your grub.conf or lilo.conf. This
will keep the ACPI daemon from choosing IRQs for your hardware, and a
new, better configuration may accimagically arise. I boot with the first
argument, and that is how I got the cardbus on IRQ 9.
4) [This is the extreme solution.] I forget which distro you are using,

with Mandrake or Red Hat. The only distros which worked were Debian and

support ... they told me, that it might be the O2
controller ...
they didn't knew if it's the same as in windows asio, that channels (i'm

it's not that each second block is missing, but each block is delayed by
one block of silence ... that means that it takes twice as long to play

how exactly could you
change the irq? i was able to run the hdsp on irq
11 (shared with the corresponding cardbus driver) ... no change in
behaviour ...

BTW - I have a friend who designs cardbus controllers
for O2 Micro, so
I can ask questions from the inside if we need some specific
information.
i met thomas charbonnel and we couldn't get the hdsp running on my
machine ... but we were able to track the problem to be related to the
O2 Micro controller ... (or to the dma mapping of this controller) ...
i'm currently investigating the problem (means, i'll search the kernel
archive / pcmcia-lists), but maybe you could ask your friend to help in
finding the problem ... it's probably very useful to have someone, who
knows the internals of the hardware ...

with Alsa is that you don't know (or I don't know) what its default
settings are for plain Alsa transmissions. I'm finding that playing
alsaplayer for 10 seconds at 44.1K seems to generate about 440
interrupts every 10 seconds. I suppose that means 44 interrupts/second
with a block size of 1K bytes? If you transmit for a known time and get
a different number of interrupts then that's probably important.
You could also try this with Jack where you can change block sizes
and gather more info.
Beyond that, and I don't think you'll like this idea, but it would
make a *lot* of sense to install Windows on this laptop as a dual boot
configuration and test that. It is a lot of work, but then you could
tell whether the problem is specifically that the hardware just doesn't
work or whether it's a Linux specific problem. Maybe this is not even
hardware or Alsa, but rather a kernel issue and how it handles your
cardbus chipset? I think the kernel guys, or who ever works on cardbus,
would want info like this.

the sound i hear is not related to the the block size ... that's why i

the block size i used when recording the file was the default value
(4096 ???) but the blocks of samples and silence and sound are 32

used i can say the hdsp uses the right sample rate, the
blocks that are played are played correctly, playing a soundfile takes
twice as long as it should ... no samples seem to miss ...

the block size, too ...
1K is about the size of 4096 (default block size) times 24bit (size of a

well, i installed winxp and tried to
get some sounds of the absynth demo
... it works FINE ... both on irq 5 and on irq 11 ... that's one reason
why i doubt that's a hardware problem (i can even use settings of
block sizes of 64 samples!!!)

One of the problems with the Ricoh controller was that it couldn't
handle bursts (don't know the details). Could it be that the Linux
driver is relying on this, yielding artifacts ?

According to RME, this limits the number of tracks one can
record/playback, but I don't know if it could affect playback quality of
a single stereo track.
My own laptop has identical Ricoh controllers, and after some wrestling,
I got them working. For me, one of the keys was disabling ACPI's PCI
assignments to get the card on the proper IRQ. But Tim already tried
that [right?], and I have already sent him my kernel config, so I am a
bit out of ideas....

I use the HDSP Cardbus/Multiface combination with a
ThinkPad A31
with good success. Because the the A31 (base) does not have firewire
(or USB2), I also use a cardbus firewire interface with an external
drive.
