Well, here's my quick alternative mix. It's

illustrates what I was trying to say before.

I've tried to get rid of the muddyness, by altering your organ sound
(taking out a lot of the mid/low end) without removing it completely.
I've also cut back on the stereo separation. This is a personal taste
thing, but I find over-use of stereo a little strange sounding,
especially on headphones. Of course, everyone has a different
defenition of over-use. I like to use the stereo space to give some
separation between sounds without making them sound like they come
from the far edges of the stage.
There's a break in the drums where I thought it needed it, but I
haven't bothered making a nice fill to connect it back up - still,
sounds OK.
And I didn't bother with the echoeyness, even though I like the sound
you had for that.
I think I may have the vocals up too much, but what do you think?
Just something different. It was fun to do. I really do like this
song.
Hope you don't mind what I've done to it.

hi james
i was really shocked when i first heard this ... it took me a few
listens to get where you'd gone with it. that would be the consequence
of having listened to my own mixes a thousand times over :)
---------------------------
the more i listen to this, the more i'm liking some of the stuff:
1. your intro has great potential - i really like the sound of the organ
on its own, then the bass followed by drums in quick succession. maybe
knock the initial bars of just drums away though. one thing i forgot to
go back to in my mix was the organ ... yr right, it was not very defined
... however, i think in your version it could be just a bit more ...
fatter? fuller? not too much ... maybe even some reverb might have
achieved the sound i'm thinking of.
2. i'm not too sure about the dropping of the drums during the first
verse ... what starts to convince me, however, is the way it emphasises
the handclapp-y drum beat when that kicks in. it also propels the song
forward more when the second verse comes with the drumbeat. maybe there
could be just a sort of minimal kick/hi-hat beat during the first verse,
sorta non-existent but just enough to smoothe over the transitions.
the level of the drums in your version is definitely more appropriate
than mine - i was a bit disappointed in my mix that the handclap part
was sorta buried in the mix :(
3. the vocal levels are pretty spot-on, i reckon. maybe it's just my
embarrassment, but i think they need some reverb though.
4. the guitar is a bit low for my tastes
-------------------
hmm, listening back, i'm not sure ... maybe just a *bit* more volume on
the guitar (and some reverb ... ).
it's great to have heard this ... structurally you've given me some
great ideas with the intro and first verse! in regards to the mix,
you've given me a good insight into which aspects i've been ignoring or
over-emphasising :)
i've gotta say - this really is a fun thing to do, and i look forward to
doing it some more!
cheers james!

ps - i'm gonna cross-post this, cos i'm not sure what the deal is with
LAU/LAM at the moment ... was it ever resolved as to where is most
appropriate to send Linux-Music related stuff?
