Not to mention xmms incompatibility with Beryl-like windowing/desktop
stuff.
Now, after playing a CD with xmms I want to play some tunes from the
har drive. So I open the m3u file and after that xmms redoes all the
connections to jack, bypassing the jamin connections I made. And xmms
makes a lot of connections to the default alsa_pcm device )in this case
supporting a M-Audio 1010LT). So I have to unconnect all of them and
then connect xmms again to jamin.
Is there a jack compatible ogg/mp3 player out there that does not do
that ? Better yet, is there a xine jack plugin ?

I am using aqualung[1] for playing music files through jack. I just
checked: it doesn't change the connections when editing the playlist, so
it should be fine for your scenario.

You should be able to configure arts to use jack as a backend, and to
configure Amarok/xine to use arts as its backend.
Not speaking from experience, just what I'm lead to believe is possible.... ;)

When Jack is running, i use Amarok/ Mplayer / VLC with sucess. I think
they don't go through Jack but through alsa, but anyway that works.

about xine.
Someone here was recently bemoaning the poor performance of xine with JACK.
I don't know whether that was with this plugin or the earlier one based on
jackasyn that was never actually included in the official xine tree.

I tried xine, since it's already installed. It seems to work OK but
when I change from one side of the Beryl cube to the other there's a
short glitch. And the machine froze by two times. Whether this is
asscoiated with xine, I don't know. Or maybe it's the combination of
Beryl, jack, Jamin, VMware running Windows. And xine.
It's a bit too bad that Linux starts to be like this. I mean, to be
like run-of-the-mill Windows. I'm directing this rant mostly at Beryl,
whose team does not seem to be able to stop releasing releases
no-matter-what. Een if their server was attacked by Compiz people. The
last update I did on a x86_64 machine broke it down. No more Beryl.
Then, what would people do ? Start becoming like Windows tweakers who
know all the little black box tricks that makes Windows work and
while making plain people think they're computer geniuses.
Well, I hope Linux won't continue on that trend and will instead remain
a very stable system. I guess it's possible to be cute and stable. Or
is it ?

Hmm. Isn't there an option like "Release Device When Playback Is Stopped"?
You
should un-check that, if there is. The xmms driver is dropping its connection
to jack when playback stops, and that is what is causing your problem. (You
could conceivably see this issue with other players, too).

just works (usually), but it's missing a lot. I wish amarok and
rhythmbox had jack backends. I'd even be happy with an esd jack

I DON'T want to know what that would imply for Dolby Surround.
Agreed on managing songs, I'm just talking quickly playing something in
jack.
For song collection management may all-time favorite is Mozilla Songbird.
It's built by the creators of WinAmp, based on XUL, so you can use the
same player as your Windows Free Software Soft Convertees, and there's a
picture of two birds having sex on their web site.

They say it's a dev preview but I found it extremely usable and beautiful.
No Jack backend though, which is why I didn't mention it at first... But
we could lobby for it.
