Hi!
Has anybody tested the Echo Layla 24? I'm searching for an external audio
interface with low latency (for soft synths) and high audio quality (I'm
tired of internal cards, buzzing or making stupid sounds when I'm moving the
mouse or something) and of course it should support Linux.
Layla catched my eye first, because you can also use it in conjunction with a
laptop. That's very handy, although not that important.
Any pros or contras? Or can anybody recommend another device that matches
these criterias?
And whatabout DSP functionality? I read a while ago that there are interfaces
which come with DSP chips. Is that useful? Or are they supported only by very
few programs?

AFAIK there are no drivers for any echo cards for linux.
Not ALSA, not OSS, not anything. I would be happy to hear otherwise....

Damn, you're right. I looked to the old ALSA page
(http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/) and didn't see they're marked grey.
Is there else a demand for this device? Means, should we write a driver?

If you dont need optical or adat. An Maudio Delta 1010 can be had for
~$600us, in fact I got a demo from Mars for $499, because they did not
have the m$ based sw that came with it, darn ;-) It has everything the
Layla has except optical, and Adat i/o. Or for ~$800 you can get an RME
H-DSP with a multiface box, it has everything the Layla has, and you can
hook it up to a laptop too. The Layla looks to be ~$1000, so its more
expensive, than the Maudio or RME products. Also RME and Maudio have
been big supporters of the Linux audio community, so why not vote with
your dollar? In fact the HDSP Linux driver came out around the same time
the product became available, hows that for support?

Yes, there is demand for it, but IIRC, Echo have never given out the
necessary programming information.

These prices differ from what I've seen, which is >$900 for
Hammerfall-DSP and ~700 for Layla.

Looks like the Layla I looked at originaly was over priced, but it came
with Cubase. That makes it worth it, NOT ;-)
