I was recently converting some compact cassettes to ogg/flac when I
noticed the stereo image was reversed.
After poking about, I came to the conclusion that:
Left Channel:
White or black phono (RCA) plug
Tip of stereo jack
Right Channel:
Red phono (RCA) plug
Ring of stereo jack
but I couldn't find a definitive answer on the web. I have one
commercially made hookup cable that goes red phono to the tip of the
jack on the other end, and yes, this was the one pugged into the sound
card...
Is this correct?

archives):
Turn you desk around!

PS: Do those cassettes contain spoken information "This is left","This is
right" or how do you say which channel is left/right?
After all it should be unimportant right from hearing wether the drumset
sounds like when you are at the playing position or at the listening
position. And even an Orchestra where you expect the first violins to come
from left can be recorded with a stereo-view from one of the musicians...

They were actually recordings of passing vehicles - yes, okay, I should
get out more - so the channel reversal was pretty obvious.
But I wanted to be sure the hardware was hooked up correctly before
looking at the next thing - I think there is a *software* reversal, if I
use OSS emulation, going straight into ALSA seems OK, but I need to get
my facts straight before I discuss this further.

I seem to remember this sort of thing being debated when TV first
started carrying stereo sound..

That is indeed the usual convention, both in terms of tip/ring and in color.
