Hello All,
I'm moving from Debian Woody to Debian Sarge, and would like assistance on
setting up the system to optimally run Linux Audio packages.
Such suggestions would be which of the 2.6 kernels to run, which kernel
patch sets to use, etc. I'm on a dial-up connection to the Internet,
which takes me around 2 hours to download a kernel source.
I also prefer to stay with the Stable packages for the Apt sources.
If anyone would be so kind to assist me, please reply to me offline.

If you are using Debian, why not use Demudi? It already has everything
you need for low-latency audio, if you don't want to spend your hours
downloading source code and compiling your stuff by hand.

Didn't Sarge ship with the horrible NPTL 0.60 bug?
That should be reason enough to use Ubuntu, Debian does not seem to mind
shipping completely non-working packages.

Unfortunately, NTPL is part of libc. That is not a package
distributions are eager to update, because *everything* depends on it.
It just needs the patch that I posted, check the bug
report. That's
what Ubuntu did for Hoary, it's NPTL 0.60 with this and a few other
critical bugs fixed.
But none of this changes the fact that Sarge for audio is a non starter,
you'll still have to run unstable.
It works fine for me, using the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL workaround for the
NTPL bug.
It *is* annoying that they didn't fix it. But, I think the problem is
that Sarge was frozen for so long and they didn't want to perturb the
whole release by dropping a new libc. I would't blame them for that.

I guess that the Sarge release got hammered by the millionaire who hired
many Debian developers last year and switched them from working on
Debian to working on Ubuntu..

That is a bug in the obsolete version of libc6 which is provided by Debian.
Maybe the package maintainers and the Debian project leaders should be made
aware by the Linux Audio community that former supporters of Debian have moved
to Ubuntu because of bug 266507. People here have spent countless hours to
diagnose that bug, find a fix and deal with problems resulting from the
non-fixing of that bug in Debian.
I have CCd the glibc-maintainers and leader(a)debian.org. Maybe they can tell us
why that bugfix was not applied, the priority of the bug has not been increased
and an obsolete version of the library is used.

Brett: I have the DeMudi 1.2 disk and tried it out. It got my interest
and showed me a glimpse of what can be done in Linux audio.
But with only the 1 CDRom disk for DeMudi, it forced me to go online for
the other packages I was interested in trying out. On a dial-up
connection, this is a serious factor.
MarC: running Woody and then adding the DeMudi Testing branch made my
system unusable because trying to install or upgrade *any* software
package was making me download 100's of Megs of packages. On
dial-up.......
But with Sarge, your suggestion may be possible. Is installing
kernel-multimedia going to get me a 2.6.x kernel with source? My Winmodem
driver from Linuxant requires the kernel headers to be available and
consistant with the kernel config file. The easiest thing for me to do is
download the source and build it so the modem driver will build properly.
Alternatively, I'm also thinking about buying an external modem so I don't
have to download kernel source every time I change kernels.
Lee: what is the NPTL 0.60 bug?

That was one of my smartest moves ever. You will not only win in not
having to download the kernel, but also in stability and quickness.
