Inspiration is a very strange thing. On this occasion there were a
number of quite separate things going on in my world.
It was early spring and someone had commented on magnificant sunrises
there were seeing. My reply was that lately it seemed all my sunrises
were just shades of grey. Someone else commented that it sounded like a
song title.
At that time I had just devised a new voice patch for my favourite
synthesiser, and had recorded just a few chords. Quite unexpectedtly I
played a few notes that exactly fitted the phrase 'All of my sunrises
are shades of grey'.
Some six months previously, I had gone to the funeral of a very dear
friend and had been deeply touched by how alone his widow suddenly
looked. This must have been going round in the back of my mind, and
once triggered by that phrase, and the sad melody, the entire song was
written and the music substantially recorded in one day. Normally a
composition takes months for me to develop.
My next problem was singing. I collaborated with a friend who did a
very good job, but have always wanted to sing it myself. It has taken
about two years to get up to my current standard. This is not good, but
I think is just about listenable.

Hi Will,
That's a nice song with a nice melody and vocals - if you're up for a critical
comment, maybe a little too nice?
The synth pad is a bit lush for a mournful song. Sparse would be better. And I'd be
playing with the EQ on the voice to bring up the low-mids and cut down on the nasal higher
tones.
Maybe cut one verse, and throw in a bridge to suggest a wistful look out the window...
But I liked it!

I'd be interested to hear the difference that EQ suggestions makes.
To Will, you've got more tone the low notes - the G2 and A2 - than I
would have if I tried singing it but it still sounds as if that is
getting pretty low for you. Did you chose that key because you wanted
it to sound like that or for some other reason?
Overall I liked it.

I could probably add an instrumental bridge maybe between verses 2 &
3, but I wouldn't cut a verse out. It would create a hole in the story.
The only reason for my choice of key was to attempt to get in a range I
could actually sing. This was the best compromise I could find. The key
change for the last verse is an absolute killer for someone like me :(

That's amusing coz I was reading some stuff on Brian's Bedroom yesterday which
