A friend of mine is willing to loan me a laptop to do some recording.
It's a PIII with Windows ME on it. He's installed Audacity on it.
Even so, I'd prefer to run Linux, and I can't trash the hard drive on
him. So, is there a live Linux CD with Audacity which would be
good for this application? Hmmm, I'll need to write the sound file
to the hard drive, and I don't know if the drive is VFAT or NTFS.
If it's NTFS that would limit which live CDs might work for me, if
any. Thoughts folks?

being windows me i doubt it is ntfs. i don't think it could even use that,
could it?
i don't know of any live cds with audacity off the top of my head, but i
know things like the ubuntu customization kit - http://uck.sourceforge.net/,
or reconstructor - http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/ (also ubuntu) allow
you to install packages (and remove packages if they aren't needed) then
remaster a livecd from that. i did this once when i went somewhere without a
net connection to chuck a few games and things on there :)

I have had VERY good results with ntfs-3g (copying 25 Gigs of files from
NTFS to NTFS with Korean, Chinese, and English file names using
Knoppix). Knoppix and Ubuntu both support this, Knoppix by default and
Ubuntu if you get the ntfs-3g package and explicitly state you want to
use it. If you do remaster a CD, make sure you include ntfs-3g. It's a
bit slow and uses a lot of CPU (compared to the kernel ntfs driver) but
it's read/write and never gives me problems.

Windows ME doesn't do NTFS - it's VFAT/FAT32 only.

Musix is a live distro with a realtime kernel. Maybe it will help you..

64 Studio 2.0 has live CDs for both amd64 and i386:

and audacity/realtime-kernel are both included.
