Hello all...
after getting a test machine (32 bit / fedora core rt kernel from
planet ccrma) up and running with my delta 2496 configured correctly
(with your help) and recording. I decided to take the plunge and setup
my larger server which was dedicated to ms windows audio. This is a
64-bit machine with 2x-quad cores and 8GB of main memory. In it
is also my main interface, the delta 1010.
I setup a dual-boot with the exact same configuration that I did on my
test machine. Everything is functioning as on the test machine with one
notable difference: The delta 1010 has ~-30db of constant background
noise. This background noise doesn't exist in the windows boot. I
thought it might be my older mixer (from which 8 direct outs go into
the delta 1010, but after turning the mixer off and unplugging
everything (i.e., no inputs to the delta 1010), there is _still_ this
hiss.
I would like to attribute it to system noise but then why don't I hear
this when I boot into windows?
I'm basically at a loss here. I have jack running, routes to and fro
software/hardware appear to be entirely correct (I can record and play
and monitor).
Just to conclude, I have the minimal going: qjackctl up and running,
jackd started and the envy24control mixer up and the mixer shows this
hiss.
Any help here would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a CD or DVD drive connected to your 1010 ? Is your mobo
audio chipset enabled or disabled ?

Nothing connected to the 1010 (internally, that is). I had my
"on-board" audio enabled. I disabled it but that changed nothing.

If you mute all the inputs, maybe even disconnecting the inputs, do
you still get noise? Is it on a few channels? All channels? If you
change the input gains of the 1010, does the noise change? If you
change the output gains of the 1010, does the noise change?
I did have a 1010 unit which started getting intermittently noisy on
some channels, and eventually all channels. It turned out to be a
bunch of bad capacitors in the 1010. It was under warranty, and I
got an exchange unit for it. I didn't have a Windows system to see
if the symptoms were any different. On Linux the bad input has noise
levels bouncing about -10dB on the meters. I have my hardware input
level switches at +4dB, if that makes a difference.
Keep working on this. It'll be worth it....

If I mute all the Hw inputs, I still see the dull reading on the
meters but no, the monitor doesn't send anything to main out
(obviously). Yes, I've disconnected all inputs and shut off the mixer
but I still see the slight green background noise on the envy24control
meters. I've switched input gains from on the 1010 rack module as well,
no difference. .... and yes, all channels consistently.

That seems too high. Mine are all the way at the bottom. When I
have enough mic channels on, I can "see" my footsteps on the meters
as I walk across the room.

I'm getting closer to testing my new Delta 1010.
Are there any more reports of problems with the device?
I'm hoping there won't be. Hearing that some people get a "hiss" noise
is scary.
Does this issue with the device depend on which year the 1010 was made?
Or which version kernel & operating system is being used?
Or any other factors? (I'm going to assume it could be a number of
factors, though seems like it could quickly be narrowed down to just a
couple or few primary targets of concern, like the actual Delta 1010,
the computer hardware/software, or the use of an additional interface
like a mixer.)
Is it true that Delta 1010 made after 2007 has a problem/conflict with
Linux? (If so that's bad news for me! I have a brand new Delta.) :-\
I'm crossing my fingers that once I get everything hooked up correctly
between my Mackie mixer & Delta 1010 that everything will work fine on
the computer. Of course I'll need to get the software settings correct
also. I understand I can do that via JACK and "Envy24 control". Then
getting settings right in Ardour. Anyway, my main question here is
pertaining to the previous mention of the Delta 1010 having background
hiss.

are still - on the whole - two different devices.
I'm currently trying to get my software settings right, everything is
hooked up - mixer, delta 1010 - but experiencing difficulties finding
the right recording levels and am currently unable to receive audio in
playback (so I can record new tracks simultaneously during playback of
previous tracks). Zero audio at the moment. :-\

I own both of them. The 1010LT has all the components on the PCI card
while the 1010 has the audio interface in a separate rack mount box.
They appear identical in envy24ctl. I have them locked via SPDIF now.

A *well* designed mobo has them dotted all over the place, seemingly
redundant and in parallel. There are also additional ground plane
'capacitors' formed in the very structure of the board itself.
Personally I've not had very good results with VIA mobo's - all sorts
of obscure problems, especially with the micro and nano boards.
Now if the card's filtering is not 100% and the mobo's isn't either
that could be the cause of your problems.

Always possible of course but it seems likely that interrupt clashes
would be more likely to cause drop-out crackles.

Sounds to me like it points to Linux 64-bit drivers. Not and/or, unless

the mobo with a Jetway VIA Nano and installed Debian amd64 and I got
the notorious hiss.
So I took the card out and now it's running in a WinXP box with no
issues. So it's definitely not the capacitors. I think the sound of
dead capacitors would be more like AC hum. I'm getting closer to testing my new Delta
1010.
Are there any more reports of problems with the device?
I'm hoping there won't be. Hearing that some people get a "hiss"
noise is scary.
I'll be tracking 2 angles tomorrow with my hiss problem: 1) put the
card in another computer and; 2) failing (1), opening up the case
and checking capacitors. I've been reading a bit this week about
burned out capacitors.
... more tomorrow after I get my hands dirty.
Might it be a PCI interrupt priority issue? I only
have one PCI slot
in the board so I couldn't test that.

I have a soundcard (Hoontech DSP3000) using the same Envy24/ICE1712
as the Delta 1010.
I also have experience with hiss problems. I think it
happens when the hardware/software gets initialized into
an odd state. I recall it's an all-or-nothing thing.
Obviously it is rare enough that Delta et. al aren't having
trouble selling hardware. :-)
I don't remember all the details but do recall a couple
of ways I've used to control how initialization takes place are:
* power cycling the computer (initializes PCI card)
* powering on the external I/O box (usually after the computer is booted)
* loading the snd-ice1712 driver (usually after powering up the I/O box)
You can imagine that a different sequence of powering the
hardware and loading the driver could cause some difference
in behavior.

the 1010 was made?
Or which version kernel & operating system is being used?
Or any other factors? (I'm going to assume it could be a number of
factors, though seems like it could quickly be narrowed down to just a
couple or few primary targets of concern, like the actual Delta 1010,
the computer hardware/software, or the use of an additional interface
like a mixer.)
Is it true that Delta 1010 made after 2007 has a problem/conflict with
Linux? (If so that's bad news for me! I have a brand new Delta.) :-\
I'm crossing my fingers that once I get everything hooked up correctly
between my Mackie mixer & Delta 1010 that everything will work fine on
the computer. Of course I'll need to get the software settings correct
also. I understand I can do that via JACK and "Envy24 control". Then
getting settings right in Ardour. Anyway, my main question here is
pertaining to the previous mention of the Delta 1010 having background
hiss.

Could there be a difference in the drivers
between the 2496 and the
1010... or maybe between 32-bit and 64-bit? I guess my next course
of action is to simply grab the 2496 out of the test machine and
toss it in here to see if there is noise or not.
Reasonable plan. I'm using an Athlon 64-X2 in 32-bit mode.
