Hi all!
I have ISA sound card AWE 64 with 24 MB RAM extention.
This way I can load the sound font "8mbgmsfx.sf2".
This is the one and only MIDI sound for my ears.
All other techniques for instance software synthesis with
TiMidity++ sounds terrible to me, as if the
orchestra plays in a stock pot.
Now I want to buy a new computer. Unfortunatley, most
boards don't offer a ISA slot, only PCI slots.
Therfore my question: Does anybody has experience with
PCI cards on Linux? Perhaps somebody uses this
(or an similary) sound font with some PCI sound
card. (?)
If so, please send me a recommendation! Note! The
PCM sound is of no interest to me. It doen't matter
whether it noises(or so ...). I'm only interested
in good sound synthesis.

People seem to go for softsynths still.
google for "fluidsynth" from Peter Hanappe (right spelling?), which loads .sf2
files.
BTW, I think timidity ok.

supported on Linux as well.

your main memory, i.e. the RAM. This works fine and you might be able
to use really large soundfonts like the Natural Instruments set.
But although I have a SBLive, nowadays I just use iiwusynth /
fluidsynth. The pure software solution has proven to be more flexible
for my purposes, which include DSP-based destruction of the soundfont
generated sounds in Pd ;)

It's called Natural Studio: I was partly wrong. Download is at
http://www.nskit.com/
It has wonderful sounding drumsets, but a non-commercial use only,
non-free license, unfortunatly.

One thing I found out is that the creative hardware doesn't support the
full sf2, so you can playback sounds, but you can't sequence modulations,
while with fluid synth and swami you can actually squence modulations
using an external control box.

I can't see why it shouldn't be _exactly_ sounding as you isa card.
And timidity can act as a sound card with the server option ( -iA ) .
By the way, is your 8mbgmsfx.sf2 public domain ? I mean, ... err... is it freely
redistribuable ?

The 2. sounds like a real playing bigband. The 3. like

I tried this. This is still worse than TiMidity. The strings sound like
a guitar (because the don't sustain the notes) and the drums are removed.(?)

Timidity is really good, if you want to listen what notes you type
in Noteedit and how it all sounds. I haven't worked with timidity
much, but at this point (timidity + noteedit) it's really fine.
Of course, when it comes to producing high quality sound for
professional recordings, I would hesitate to use timidity with its
current PAT files. But you see, anyone who is able to pay for
superior sound buys hardware synths, hardware effect racks, ahem, in
fact -- hardware everything

I thought the Creative Labs AWE64 soundfonts had references to ROM
samples? I seem to recall that from playing with my sisters' AWE64...
If that's the case I'm guessing that timidity can't deal with ROM sample
references, but the AWE driver probably can.
This all begs the questions though.... why on earth does the original
poster think that soundfont sounds so good? It's stock Creative Labs
stuff... My years-old versions of Chaos 12M and Fluid both have some
better instruments than Creative's 8M GM font...

As I said, I didn't listen very long to the {midifile+timidity+8MGMsoundfont} compared
to the {midifile recorded from real soundcard to mp3-file} but I didn't find
differences. Maybe it was just the midifile which didn't call specific rom samples. I
really don't know. The soundfont seemed complete (GM). There are surely some bass,
treble and chorus things in SB hardware, but it's not a problem with ladspa effects.

A proposal: Download the MIDI file and the example2hardware.mp3
and compare the MP3 with your synths. If a big band plays, I agree.
If an orchestra in stock pot plays, I don't agree.

Two items:
Someone asked about the distribution rights for 8mbgmsfx.sf2 font.
It comes from one of Creative's discs shipped with the Live, so I'd be
cautious about redistributing it without Creative's permission. OTOH
maybe they don't care...
IMO the Fluid font is nicer:

It's big but definitely worth the download time.
