Just got my march issue.. ARDOUR on the cover.. YEAH BABY YEAH....
but there is some confusion..
the author writes that the m0audio delta66 has "12" input channels.. ?
(page 65 under the qjackctl image)
I don't get it.. are they digital inputs?
I thought them-audio had 4x4 ...?

Depending on which Delta card they are talking about, it has 10 in/out
analog and also two digital in/out (I think, check the website)

Oh, OK, it has 6 in/out total, which includes 4 analog in/out plus
digital in/out. I guess saying 12 is a bit misleading, they should have
said 6x6

As I understand it, the 4 analog inputs + 2 SPDIF inputs divide into 2
channels (left/right) each, so you could record 12 tracks at once. But
you could also think of it as 6 channels with left/right pan on each.
I seem to remember reading that the audio capture always comes over the
PCI bus as 12 channels, but alsa's plughw can reduce it to 2.

I suspect the author is confused. My delta1010 (IIRC same chipset) has;
8 analogue (balanced) in
8 analogue (balanced) out
SPDIF in (stereo)
SPDIF out (stereo)
... and the internal mixer can also be recorded too.
If I can still count, thats 12 inputs and 10 outputs.
I think the delta66 and 44 cards drop analogue I/O and wordclock I/O.

I imagine the capture ports are equivalent, but then I'm not clear
what capture_11 and capture_12 do. Maybe, just hook it up, play some
sounds, and watch the envy24control meters?

I've not verified it, but the manual says they're the digital mixer
outputs - which make it possible to do old-style track bouncing with ZLM

That's true for all ice1712 cards, even the stereo cards like the M-Audio
Audiophile and cards by other manufacturers. The reason is the architecture of
the chip and the fact, that the ALSA driver is somehow a generic chipset driver
more than a card driver.
envy24control has an option to set up its display according to the
"real" channel count:
$ envy24control --pleasehelpme
envy24control: unrecognized option `--pleasehelpme'
usage: envy24control [-c card#] [-D control-name] [-o num-outputs] [-i num-inputs]
...
-o, --outputs Limit number of outputs to display
-i, --input Limit number of inputs to display
-s, --spdif Limit number of spdif outputs to display
But you need to configure this on your own or just ignore the supernumerary
channels.

There are 6 mono inputs: 4 analog (on balanced TRS 1/4") and 2 S/PDIF (L/R).
In the mixer, however, I believe there are 8 inputs: the
aforementioned 6, plus 2 (L/R) from the internal Digital Mixer.
BTW, has anybody ever actually used the Digital Mixer inputs?

manual for the 1010LT claims that more than one card can be installed
and synced up by connecting the wordclock out to the wordclock in on
the next card, effectively giving you 20 inputs and outputs. Is this
something that can be done in Linux, or does this require the Windoze
controller software to make this work?
Can't wait to get my copy of LJ. I want to read that Ardour article!

This can be done in Linux with the envy24 control panel software for
ice1712 based cards,

This _is_ simple to do. On the right side of the editor window, there's
a pane for "Regions/name". Right-click in there and choose "Import
audio".
That'll bring up a file requestor. Find your WAV file and click "Import
selected", and the file will be listed there. You then just drag the
name into an Ardour track, and you're there.

The 4x4 analogs on the Delta 66 are equivalent to two stereo inputs +
two stereo outputs.
Must have been an error in the article. I would expect the author to be

Note, I've never actually tried listening to the output of the above.
I wonder now if the levels are affected through the monitor mixer
settings, or if the mixer only affects the Digital Mix L/R? An
