Gah, I hate computer shopping. Now I have read that the aforementioned Turbo
Boost on these chips is problematic on linux anyway. So I'm back to not
knowing which of the i7 920 or i7 860 is a better choice for linux audio.
All opinions welcome.

I suspect they are both great.
You might try Tom's Hardware and their CPU charts but you'll have to
choose a benchmark that you think it right. There are a couple of
audio and video transcoding charts, along with many others.
