Hey,
this has been so fun for me I figured it could be for some of you
also... Today in 2-3 hours I've built a 2 string fretless bass following
more or less this instructable:

It's incredible the sound it has considering it's a piezo stuck between
some scrap wood and weed-eater strings
The piezo is putten directly into the soundcard and it clips... I should
parallel it with a zener diode... BTW what is the max voltage before
clipping on soundcards? is it soundcard-dependant?
No offense to real basses meant... of course it's only a game... but I
suggest trying it!

cool, looks great - i'll have a listen when i get home. i'd be
intrigued to see some pics of this; i'm particularly interested in the
wood you used - obtaining a kayak paddle, only to trash it seems a bit
over the top
i'm keen to make something like this as an alternative to the rather
constrained, traditional DAW + synths + plugins environment i usually
exist in

nothing particularly thought, it's just some wood I had lying around...
I think it was used as decorative in the house, put between the floor
and the wall - like you can see also in the lower right of the photo,
the darker wood on the feet of the wall.
Things that can be improved:
*Machine Heads. I used those of a classical guitar, but they're way too
thin for bass cords. I'm thinking of an easy and cheap way to do some,
cause spending at least 40€ for new ones seems nonsense on this project
*Gauge of strings. ATM the thick one is really too thick..
*Sanding the back or covering it up with something smooth, to avoid
getting wood chips in your thumb when you move on the neck.
*Adding a zener diode.
Other than that I'm very happy with it

Hi renato,
only saw the question now, so sorry for the late reply.
The input voltage of soundcards depends on the headroom of the AD of your
soundcard. (e.g. Dynamic Range).
Pro and semi-pro cards often have a line level of +4dBu (1.227V RMS, 3.472V
Peak) plus a bit headroom.

Yes, thanks. I might just try sticking in my USB function generator and
go up with voltage untill the sound card clips...
Also, I realized that putting a zener diode in parallel will just clip
the signal at the diode voltage, so it won't solve the problem.
A simple resistor in series with the piezo (of appropriate value)
should work, shouldn't it?

It should work as far as I know. I would try it out as resistors aren't that
expensive.
You could also use a potentiometer instead of the resistor.
