Any issues or happy stories about this Saffire USB interface? I'm planning to buy one usb interface soon.

The Edirol UA-25Ex is very good and very well supported in Linux. Mine has served me well for years. One thing though: if your USB port is of type EHCI, check exactly which version you have (using lspci) and google it before! I'm saying this because I changed laptop few months ago, and some EHCI USB ports have a bug that makes Jack/Alsa and USB 1 soundcard not working at all... I'm now using a M-Audio Fast-Track Ultra (USB2, so I don't have issues with EHCI anymore), but it's not 100% supported yet (although the Alsa developers are working on it)... Hope this helps! From my experience Sounddevices products are reliable and have superb audio

quality. I've used their on location mixer and the pre's and AD is outstanding. Never used the usb device, but maybe someone else did... On their site they state that the usbpre2 is supported under Linux. Interesting. i bought a Terratec DMX 6Fire USB for 170,- few months ago. Supported in linux since 2.6.32 afair; both audio and midi. da.

I also really did want to buy the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB, but unfortunately it does not seem to work. See these discussions: http://goo.gl/lXzWe http://goo.gl/fu0zr http://goo.gl/pHxfL As far as my research goes, similar devices are: – Presonus Audiobox – M-Audio Fast Track Pro – M-Audio Mobile Pre MK II (it's in my list, but I can't remember if it works as flawlessly as the others) – Lexicon Alpha/Lambda/Omega Studio They are all selling for 100-200€ in Germany (apart from the Lexicon Alpha, which is smaller and cheaper). There is also the Roland (or Cakewalk or Edirol) UA-25(EX), which seems to be a favourite for many people, but it is discontinued and disappeared out of the big German stores only some days ago. I am not decided yet which device to buy. Is there one device, that has clearly better (or worse) quality than the others? Especially in regard to the mic preamps? I heard only good of the Focusrite preamps, so I'm quite sad that it does not work. This depends on who you talk to. The sales reps maybe(I don't have any direct contact with them much), but the tech support guys I found to be fairly knowledgeable and I had been attempting to track down a problem with the Focusrite drivers on OS X with them for some time on their Firewire line, it got addressed a year or so ago. I will second ron's opinion on Presonus, their interfaces break a lot in my experience. Can't say I have seen nearly the same thing from Focusrite, but then again I haven't dealt with as many Focusrite interfaces(I have my Pro40, but few others I know have one) as compared to Presonus where for a while it seemed like every other person I worked with was purchasing one, and out of those at least every other interface broke, if not more. Same goes for Focusrite, at least for me. My Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 has one faulty channel so I have to return it and I had to return my Saffire Pro 10 IO twice now because of faulty contacts and/or preamps. Maybe I'm just unfortunate, my bandmate has two Pro 10 IO's and never had any issues with it (but then he doesn't use the preamps). Well the one thing I will say in Presonus's defence is that I have no issue using their standalone hardware, just their interfaces I avoid.
