Hello people,
I am thinking of getting a Sound Blaster Live. But I want to be sure
that there are Linux drivers supporting its Sound Font hardware synth
and its S/P DIF digital output.
So, are there such drivers and of so - which ones?
The alsa-project.org page on SB Live says "MIDI on SB live drive not
working properly". Does this mean that Sound Font sytnth will NOT work
on SB Live?

The only ones, if you mean ALSA drivers

It will. I wonder when they have updated this page last time. Take a
look at www.alsa-project.org instead.

I think this refers specifically to the Live Drive patch panel, not the SB
Live itself. The sound font synth works fine on my SB Live 512 works fine,
using sfxload to load the samples.

I've actually got an sblive card, and if you get the sblive value it works
fine for loading soundfonts, and the value oem can be gotten for only
about $25-30 new and even less used on ebay, I wonder if its possible to
use the two cards as one with a .asoundrc, to route the sblive soundfont
output through an audiophile's spdif, or to use jack to route soundfont
output on an sblive to another program that could route it out the
audiophile or hoontech spdif?

A person on jackit-devel has written a patch to allow that and claims
that they work very well together.

There's no support for spdif on it, if you need that I'd reccomend the
audiophile or another ice1712 card, since you can use the envy24control
mixer with those cards to control the spdif in/out. You can use fluidsynth
to playback soundfonts from ram, and right now it actually covers more of
the complete sf2 spec (having support for realtime modulation
control) than the sblive hardware has (which doesn't support realtime
effects modulations). I approached teh swami soundfont editor's creator
about adding realtime control to effects modulations for sblive and found
out that its doesn't support it, so a person is better off going with
fluidsynth as you can also load as many soundfonts as your system's memory
can handle when you go that route.

That would be cool, but I don't have the $$$ for an Audiophile at this
point.
So, is the SB Live SPDIF output totally useless under Linux? Or does
it at least mirror what is on the analog output? I want to be able at
least to play out WAV/MP3 via SPDIF, if not MIDI.

How much CPU power does it want? I currently have a Duron 650.
Upgrading the CPU would be somewhat costly, and I can't spend much on
audio HW right now - so the HW synth, along with the SPDIF, is why I
am looking at the Live.
Indeed for the final rendering I am ready to use fluidsynth into wav.
After all, a final render does not have to be realtime, and a wav is
needed anyway to burn in onto a CD. By the way, does fluidsynth
support non-realtime rendering (from Rosegarden, into a WAV file) if
the CPU is not powerful enough to render it all in realtime?
